We ate here as we thought it was catered by Blue NR3 (which was confirmed on our arrival by the waitress), but were later told this was a misunderstanding and it stopped a couple years ago. I can see now that they no longer operate at this location. We had a disappointing Sunday lunch at the Golden Star and we will definitely not be coming back. Do not be fooled (like us) with the overall star rating on TripAdviser, as you can see there are also some ‘terrible’ reviews from other customers who have recently eaten here which very much align with our experience. I personally couldn’t eat the vegetarian option (I’ve eaten many Sunday lunches out and never had this experience), but when I politely fed this back and asked to return my full plate for a refund, the member of staff was dismissive and defensive, saying it was a personal preference and there was nothing they could do. They had taken the plate of food back into the kitchen without offer anything else, so I paid for a meal that I didn’t even eat. Aside from this, the general quality of the food was poor. The potatoes and cauliflower cheese were cooked well, but the vegetables were soggy, the Yorkshire pudding was cold and the gravy was instant. There are so many restaurants in Norwich and Norfolk that offer a great a Sunday lunch with lovely service too and this is not what we...
Read moreI don't know what it is about this place, I mean it's next to a mediumly busy road, and the surrounding buildings aren't the prettiest, but I find the place very relaxing. The locals that frequent the place are friendly, the beer is excellent, and of average price. I have never tried the food but I would expect it to be fairly decent. They have a quiz night on Thursdays and everybody in the bar seems to talk to one another. Most years, my wife and I go to Norwich for a couple of days and I always insist that we have a pint here. It has managed to retain the atmosphere of a pub which so many places are sadly lacking nowadays. Oh, I don't know who is in charge of the music in there, but I always like what I hear. Perhaps it's a pub for old gits like me or something but if you are looking for a pub that really feels like a pub and not some sanitised corporate version, get yourself along to this place. If I lived in Norwich, it would...
Read moreA cosy pub with the feel of a proper local, the likes of which you might not expect to find so close to a city centre. 4 cask ales on the day I visited: Greene King Abbott plus 3 other beers all from Norfolk/Suffolk independent breweries. The Nethergate and the Lacons I had were spot on! (My only slight gripe might be that all 4 cask beers on offer were amber ales, but maybe that's what the clientele like, so who am I to comment?) A huge plus point was the way the bar and the whole pub had been so enthusiastically decorated for Halloween with old fashioned paper chains. Discovering a bar billiards table in the other bar was the icing on the cake. A quick chat with Simone, the barmaid who gave off vibes of being the landlady, and was clearly part of the furniture, cemented the fact that this pub definitely has the "wow factor". Highly...
