Well I must say, I was super impressed with my very first visit here to Miller and Carter in Wollaton. My friend and I made a reservation on Sunday for dinner, as we planned to have a meal after a few drinks at the pub at the road. He recommended Miller and Carter, after having been a number of times, both to this one and the one in Stoke too. We were able to find parking, especially with it being later in the evening. Stepping inside the actual restaurant itself... Wow! Very clean with a wonderful vibe to it. We were taken to our table by our waiter and given the menus to choose from. I was amazed at the selection available from the menu, everything sounded delicious. But of course, when at a steak restaurant, it HAD to be steak! My eyes were drawn to the 10oz Black Angus Filet Mignon, as I love how tender these cuts are. I was impressed by the freedom available, when it came to choosing how I liked my steak to be cooked (medium well), beef butter (I believe it was) and the accompanying sauce, which I decided on the stilton and white port sauce... A delightful experience for the taste buds, when combined with the succulence of the filet mignon and also a side, whereby I went with the thick cut chunky chips. Before the steak, there came a lettuce wedge with a choice of dressings (I decided on the long Clawson Stilton and blue cheese.) And honestly? I didn't think a lettuce wedge would taste so good, but damn this was delicious!! Although it may not seem like there was a lot on the plate, it was very filling and looks were definitely deceiving! On the plate alongside the filet mignon, was the divine onion loaf. I wasn't sure of it at first, but my word it was good! There were also the thick cut chunky chips on the side too and it was a fantastic meal. Hands down, one of THE best I've ever had when it comes to steak. And of course, we HAD to make room for dessert! My friend had Carter's Iconic Triple Chocolate and Salted Caramel Cookie Pie, which looked amazing. I, on the other hand, had the banoffee pie and it was superb! The flavours of the cream, the biscuit base, the caramelised banana and the toffee sauce all came together, to create a sweet and divine treat. I've never had a banoffee pie like that before, but I loved the presentation of it and the twist Miller and Carter did on this mouth-watering treat.
At the end of the night, my friend and I split the bill and found the price to be very reasonable, considering the quality of the food and the presentation of it. The service was excellent and I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough! I very much look forward to returning...
Read moreWe visited early Friday evening and at that time the restaurant wasn't busy. As we were on our way to an event we did not want a special meal and so, looking at the beautiful menu, we decided on a simple steak and fries each and decided that we would return another time when we could do one if the other options justice. The staff were very polite and our waiter (Sartis/Sarfis) very good. My husband, who usually prefers medium rare steaks, ordered medium as that was the suggested way his steak should be cooked. I also ordered medium as that is my preference. We were quite surprised when the salad came immediately and the steaks came within 10 minutes of ordering. We were even more surprised when both steaks were VERY rare, seared only minimally on the outside and very bloody in the middle. My husband could eat his like that, but I couldn't and had to ask for it to be cooked more. When it came back, it was ok, but (the same steaks, which was fine were) still medium rare at best. It was quite clear from the time it took from the waiter taking our order to us getting the meal that the steaks had been very undercooked and had not been rested for even a minute. It would not have been possible given the quick turnaround time to cook them to medium and rest them appropriately. We did accidentally get another fries with my retuned meal, but all that was said by what appeared to be the front of house person who returned my meal was "Oh look you've got extra chips now, hope that's better" before walking away. The whole meal still cost over £60 for something that I've had better in my local pub and it was disappointing that my husband had to watch me eat with him having finished. We also felt very awkward as we could see from the reaction of the 3 people standing chatting at the pass that we were clearly just awkward customers. From going in the door to leaving took 50 minutes! Given that it was not massively busy, we are not sure why the cooking of the steak was very rushed. We really now can't decide whether to try it again, as we are torn between the great reviews and spending £150 on an expensive steak only to be disappointed. Was the lack of care because we had ordered the cheaper option? Who knows? Either way, a...
Read moreAte here last night - whilst acknowledging it was a Friday and they were moderately busy (but not completely full,) unfortunately there were a number of issues.
Firstly, the waiter just would not give us enough time to look at menus - from the moment we sat down we were hounded for drinks orders - I hadn't even found the drinks menu yet! Then when we asked for more time she was back within a minute to ask again and stood over us until we decided. We had unfortunately just been involved in a minor car crash outside and just needed a moment! We had gone ahead from the other part of our group out of courtesy so we weren't late to our table. When all of our group were seated and had yet again needed to ask for a moment more to select food because yet again they had quite literally just sat down and were not given a chance to look at a menu, the waiter then disappeared for about 30 minutes. This pattern of over and under-attentiveness continued throughout the night with food and drinks orders.
We eventually managed to order 2x 12oz ribeyes and 1 chateaubriand and waited. And waited. And then the wedge salad came out a good 15 minutes before the rest of our meal. It was now 8pm, we had arrived at 6.45. so we ate the salads because we were starving and waited. And waited. The bowls were cleared away with no apology or explanation for where the rest of our meal was. The worst part though. When the meals eventually arrived the chateaubriand was burnt. A £70 medium-rare steak and it came out crunchy, crispy, tasting-of-carbon, burnt?! In what world is that ok...? It being already kind of a fraught evening we just paid and left, but I was severely disappointed in the whole experience of what was supposed to be a rare (ha ha) treat.
Although clean enough, the bathrooms were also run down with broken fittings and hand dryers that didn't work. The atmosphere was fairly lively, but I was sat under a speaker so often struggled to hear the waitress speak.
Overall, I really just can't recommend...
