This is a hidden gem in Abbey Green, Nuneaton! You would almost certainly walk past if you didn’t know its location. From the outside, this Italian Restaurant looks like a grey little shop front, but don’t judge a book by its cover! You would never imagine such a large place is there. If you know Nuneaton, my wife advises me that “Amore Mio” is located where the “Oddfellows Arms” used to be. Entering from the main Abbey Street, they present you with a small bar and two small round tables. However, the surprise that is a bit of “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.” moment comes as they guide you through a rear door. It opens up into a restaurant that could easily set 80 to 90 people. No cheap paper napkins and bare tables here. Everything is good quality cutlery, real linen napkins and beautiful tablecloths. Seating as arranged in a comfortable setting, in multi-levels, so if you want a private meal for two you can sit in one of the alcoves, if you have a family meal, Wedding Reception, it’s big enough to accommodate.
The menu is extensive, however, they could do with making some aspects a little clearer. We had a little difficultly reading the menu and heard a few tables say the same. They also have a special board with some beautiful options. The wine menu is reasonably comprehensive, the Pinot Grigio and Prosecco are first class!
We opted to skip the starter after seeing the size of the main meals that were coming out for other diners. You get a generous serving. There was no way we could manage all three courses. I opted for the chicken Milanese with vegetables, my wife had the risotto with chicken and peas. The presentation of our choices was good, served on trendy plates and bowls. I need to mention the size of the portions again, as the size of the risotto could’ve easily fed to 3 people. Real value for money. One very important point, if you have any dietary needs, let them know when booking as they will either make it specially off-menu, or get some alternative in. We heard a regular ask for diabetic options for dessert. The owner has said they will get fresh fruit and sugar free options in order to cater for these customers. Personally, I think this is great. It opens the menu up to people who would normally opt to go without.
Clearly, the food is freshly made to order with good quality ingredients. They cooked the vegetables to perfection, all al dente, although the selection could be much wider. My wife’s risotto was excellent and well presented. All to often restaurants mess risotto’s up. Our mains only took about 10 minutes from order, more than enough time to have a glass of wine whilst waiting.
The deserts are something for those with a real sweet tooth. My wife had profiteroles, three giant Choux buns came out covered in an amazing dark and milk chocolate sauce. I had the crème brûlée, a nice smooth creamy vanilla custard and crunchy topping, perfection!
The prices are very reasonable and we have paid a lot higher for half the quality. Our bill came to just below £80 which we thought was more than reasonable.
The staff were excellent, very attentive and always eager to please, albeit a little more knowledgeable on the menu, would have really helped. However, don’t let that turn on any part of your judgement. Add to that, the customer service was first class!
Would we revisit Amore Mio again? You bet! We love Italian food, eaten at every Italian restaurant in the region and some of the top ones in London and Manchester. This is definitely one of the hidden gems in the region. If you want freshly made Italian food, that’s made in the restaurant’s own kitchen, really generous portions and a reasonable wine list, this is a place I can thoroughly recommend. They even do take-away!
Thank you for a...
Read moreI take my original review back … our second visit this evening … prepared to give it another go and spend £50-£60 on a Thursday night tea. There was a female manager there tonight… you’ll see why this matters in a moment… and that they are a licensed restaurant. We ordered drinks and decided on mains. The service was a lot frostier than it had been on our previous visit which was noticeable straight away… we ordered mains and indicated we would most probably order desert afterwards… i then made the same request that I do in every restaurant I ever visit… I need tap water on the side, a request that hadn’t been a problem the last time we visited. The waiter disappeared and another one came back looking very nervous to tell me that they don’t ‘do’ tap water … I would have to buy a bottle… I said of course you do, I had it last time I was here and aren’t you licensed? You know it’s a requirement by law to offer this? He went back to the manager quaking in his boots a little and then another member of staff was sent down to us … he did bring water but made it clear that it was a one off … like it was a big favour… I just looked at my husband and said am I being difficult? Am I right? We googled … and there it was … all the time feeling quite embarrassed that they made such a thing about it … the mood was spoiled … the atmosphere cold … we decided they didn’t deserve our money … I walked to the front and asked if I could pay for the drinks … the lady manager was again quite frosty and had her phone in her hand where she had been Googling to see if I’m right ..she wasn’t apologetic … she was irritated so I said you must be embarrassed to see that I’m right? (I’m thinking such a fuss about something so simple ) …she admitted she was embarrassed… She said is there anything she could do? And it was said without an ounce genuine concern..I said it’s such a shame because I’d actually enjoyed the food last time, however your attitude, the fact your staff were frightened of you… and how stupid you made us feel when we’d already had other drinks as part of our order… like I was being cheap(when I just wanted to take my meds)… I politely told her not to worry as we wouldn’t be back … shame really as we dine out a lot… I said we’ll go to the Agra Palace where the first thing they’ll give me is a jug of ice cold water…So … I would give it a wide berth, there’s better food and manners out there … you want Italian… treat yourselves and go to San Giovanni’s or change your mind and get a lovely warm welcome (and a jug of cold refreshing water) from the team at Agra Palace… they’ve been showing great customer service skills for...
Read moreI found Amore Mio about a year ago when we moved to the area after a Google search. I have been wanting to visit since then. The opertunity finally arrived for my birthday meal. I booked the table online in good time via their website but it took 2 days to get confirmation so was extremely close to calling it a no response and booking somewhere else.
We arrived and through no faults of the restaurant found it very difficult to park. We arrived just before our allotted time and was seated immediately. The service was ok but, not one of the staff could answer simple questions about the dishes on the menu. When one of them did attempt it was clearly a swag guess and completely wrong as it was conflicting info from the menu and not even the answer for the question I asked.
The food came relatively quickly and was of an ok standard. The portions were good and for the money it was worth it. Only thing that would have been nice is the option for smaller portions for children as a huge pizza although nice was big enough to feed two adults not just our 2 year old. Even advice from the waiter about portion size would have been welcomed but, I think this is a clear area for improvement in the front of house staff.
Décor is good but slightly clinical with a strange mix of ultra modern with a few iron wheels thrown in to the mix. If I had been dropped in that room and asked which cuisine was served there I would not have said Italian.
It was clean in the restaurant but my daughter. Reported the toilets were found wanting for cleanliness.
Overall it was a lovely evening with some ok to good food. Not disappointed but probably wont be going back. This is mainly due to the front of house experience. The food and place are passable but the front of house is...
