As a multi-award-winning entrepreneur who works with businesses nationwide, I expect licensed premises to operate legally and ethically. Unfortunately, this pub failed on both counts.
I visited with a friend who purchased two alcoholic drinks and requested a glass of tap water for me (I don’t drink alcohol). Staff refused to provide the water free of charge, claiming it must be paid for since I wasn’t the one who ordered the alcohol. I was then told that next time, I’d be charged for a bottled water instead of receiving a free glass of tap water, which is a legal requirement under the Licensing Act 2003.
The law clearly states that licensed venues must provide free potable tap water on request. There is no requirement that the person drinking the water be the alcohol purchaser.
I’ve reported this incident to the local licensing authority — but it raises a bigger question: If a venue is willing to ignore basic licensing laws, what else are they getting away with...
