Visited The Exchequer on Monday July 17th 2023 around 3pm for a bite to eat with friends. We sat at table number 2 & ordered our meals. I ordered from the Pub Classics, a steak pie with chips priced at £10.99. I'd been before for a birthday meal & thoroughly enjoyed it so I'd something to compare it with. When my food arrived the puff pastry lid of the pie was massively undercooked bordering raw (Photos enclosed) I don't know why & I'm using the term loosely here, the chef in the kitchen thought that acceptable to send out. Not wanting to complain & cause a scene whilst out with friends, I ate what I could & left the rest. I know pubs & restaurants have rising electric & gas bills to contend with but sending out a steak pie which is undercooked isn't acceptable. The ashet the pie was in had seen better days as well, all chipped & had previous evidence of paint flaking off visible. Used to enjoy a visit to The Exchequer but that's the second recent visit where the food hasn't been up to previous standards. For reference I'll include yesterday's undercooked pastry to the very same meal I'd ordered in January. Management really need to look into this as a person can get very ill if food is sent out undercooked. To balance things out, The Exchequer does do some great deals & food is usually more than acceptable but the chef yesterday wasn't on their game.

Me and my fiance went in on the 30th of May 2025 and we both ordered a mixed grill for £15.50 each we asked for the steak to be medium but was done well done and burnt the sausage was warmed up from the morning it definitely wasn't fresh the peas were dry the fried egg was hard when we asked for a soft egg the gamon was like leather we used to be regular customers but after this experience we definitely won't be back which is a shame I also left a review on trip advisor with a photo of what was left but I think the cook needs trained on how to cook steaks and for £15.50 it should all be fresh for that price that's why I'm leaving a 1 star .

We ended up there through random pub hunting found it really economic !!!! I recommend do take the option to combine the starter portion .It was a Sunday so we got 5 starter in just £10 .we got chicken wings , mozzarella sticks , fries , chicken Gonzo's and nachos. The fries option shows chicken and bacon added but we requested for normal fries .The staff was really friendly. Also, lots of options for beers so high chances you will find the beer to your taste .

I have just returned from the exchequer. And have to say what turned out to be a horrible experience, the barmaid was constant on my case about where I was sitting standing etc I was there with my two friends, one not even drinking ( driver) we engaged with various people from range of areas, who were interested in my Irish accent and where I was from etc We where sitting outside, listened to rules given, it started raining, we were given umbrellas, which everyone was using, for going for smoke etc as was pouring down, my friend and I were then approached and told can’t have a umbrella while we were smoking, ok Then we were approached and told we and others were to loud ?? Ok We then were approached again, and someone ( not us) asked why we couldn’t have a laugh etc ?? Barmaid said it was to do with spraying, when laughing and being loud etc ok ... We then asked for another drink and where told , I have told you numerous times to be quite??? You did not listen??? You have had to much to drink??? You have to leave ??? Ok I said.... I then got my friend, who was not drinking, to go confirm what had just been said to me , as nobody could believe it, she was told we were all loud and had to much to drink, she told them, she had not been drinking??? Anyway we were asked to leave, we did not argue or dispute her , but felt disgusted, we are mature women, who interacted with numerous individuals, and have not been out , due to Covid-19, nobody was rude or argumentative, but all felt disgusted at the staffs attitude especially the barmaid, who’s name we did not get , to say we were upset is an understatement, will never be back and will never go there again, once again...

Had dinner here last Friday.

It was a real disappointed, my food came out lukewarm, all the fried stuff was hot, but I'm not sure the oil has been changed recently.

This is a large venue, but when we there at around 8pm there were only around ten customers, so not exactly busy, but the tables were sticky, the box containing the sauce had tomato sauce on it and the salt and pepper was greasy, very grubby overall.

I reviewed this place last Friday on trip advisor, immediately after being in it. The next day my wife had food poisoning, unfortunately trip advisor doesn't allow you to update your post or reply to management replies.

I told the guy that cleared the table that I wasn't happy and why.

I'm surprised that a venue obviously operating well below it's capacity with at least four staff on duty can't get the very basic stuff right.

I definitely will not be back.

I have edited this because the management reply to me seems to suggest I didn't complain or let the staff know I wasn't happy.

It hard to believe that if the staff were asked they wouldn't remember, the bar had hardly anyone in it.

If the staff are not paying attention to issues raised by customers, that might explain why it's grubby and the food is being served lukewarm. It actually sounds like an issue with...
