Visited Hugh's today with my wife and one-year-old daughter and, unfortunately, had another extremely underwhelming experience. This was our second visit, the first was over a year ago and today we chose Hugh's as it looked cosy and was one of the only local places with high chairs. We were just looking to have some warm drinks and cake.
We were promptly seated despite no booking but it was a good ten minutes before our drinks order was taken. We ordered a hot chocolate and a pot of tea. I asked about the chocolate cake to see if it had any fruit in it but the server said he didn't know and would ask. We then endured a 30 minute wait for the order to arrive, by which point the wee one was fed up and needing out of the high chair. The place didnt seem particularly busy so this was strange. The cake was so so dry and tasted stale so definitely didn't feel fresh.
I have to say the staff, whilst friendly enough, seemed more preoccupied with socializing amf chattjng with friends who were visiting the café, neglecting their paying customers. Having worked in restaurant management myself, I find this level of service appalling.
It's concerning to see that reviews from as far back as a year ago cite similar issues with slow service. The standard response at the time was that “staff were in training.” but from what I saw the issues haven't...
Read moreThey are very disorganised and not ready to open yet. My husband and I went twice. The first time was a reduced menu, which was a understandable as they had just opened but their soup wasn’t very nice and was overpriced. However, we made the mistake to give them another chance.
The second time we were seated outside in the sun and given menus both of us looking forward to eating outside. But we were then told by an embarrassed waiter that we weren’t allowed food outside even though we had picked our order. We noticed others had food at their table outside, which was confusing. He apologised it was managers decision and we were moved inside to a warm claustrophobic seat at the back. The waiter forgot to bring us our drinks after 15mins, while others came in within minutes were being served drinks before us. My husband eventually decided to leave and I explained to a nearby staff member, why we were leaving, so he could cancel the order.
Later, when walking past the restaurant we seen others eating food outside. It’s very confusing and they seem very disorganised. We felt so unwelcome I doubt we...
Read moreSecond time dining in the evening, and we all very much enjoyed the experience. We didn’t realise the evening menu changed so regularly (a good thing, really), and were initially concerned that what we had returned to eat wasn’t available. But…the alternatives were delicious. It is pricier than the area warrants, but £70 for 3 people who had a starter and a main on a Friday night in a lovely restaurant, with great service, and tasty food is pretty good. We didn’t have any drinks as it was a flying visit, but we left clean plates and with full bellies. We will check the evening menu before booking next time (not sure if it’s published), and hopefully make more of a night of it. Love the fact they are considering more vegetarian options, although the beetroot and goats cheese starter, and vegetable pie main were delicious - a choice would be a great addition. The Balmoral Chicken was delicious, and the Pork and Wagyu Burger tasted fantastic. Hugh’s is well worth a try for a more local dinner that is a...
