Visited on a Friday afternoon for a late lunch with a friend. It was quiet and there were lots of staff around. The bar is decorated to a very high standard and it’s spacious.
We were seated immediately which was good. Over the course of the visit we were served by five different members of staff. None of the five staff were particularly friendly and as you’d expect there was no attempt to have any sort of rapport. I have read in other reviews since coming home that there are issues with staff receiving tips. I didn’t tip due to the disinterest of the staff and I can’t help but think these two things are connected.
I wasn’t even in my seat and I was being asked what I would like to drink without an opportunity to look at either the food or drink menu.
On a more positive note, the menu is an extensive and varied bar menu, albeit a little on the pricey side.
I ordered haggis and black pudding fritters (the description suggested these were mixed together however it is one haggis fritter and one black pudding). My friend ordered salt and pepper chicken. We shared a baked Camembert.
I had to request a plate for the fritters. They came on a flat wooden board (disgusting) and a boat of peppercorn sauce. Had I poured it, it would have been all over the table and my lap. Who thought that was a good idea? However they did taste good and were a hearty portion for a starter.
The baked Camembert was described as being baked in soda bread but this was not the case. It was baked in a dish with 4 small thin slices of bread on the side (again, a wooden board), not enough for the amount of cheese, we ate the last with a fork.
For dessert I ordered pear crumble with custard. I was served pear crumble with ice cream (again on a wooden slab) and by this point I couldn’t be bothered asking for it to be corrected, as my friend’s chocolate cookie dessert had arrived. The crumble was a tasty, decent sized portion, just a shame about the lack of custard. My friend’s cookie was in a small skillet (and you guessed it - on a wooden slab) which spun around as he attempted to eat it. He said it was underwhelming.
To drink my friend had blackcurrant and lemonade. I had a mojito mocktail which was only £3 and looked like the real deal and tasted great. I had an espresso afterwards which tasted burnt. I wouldn’t go near their coffee again if you paid me.
Overall, we were £45.
The food was alright, but the service was poor. It wasn’t really worth £45. The place is nice. The decor is lovely, as is the lighting. I loved the selection of posters on the walls. There’s so much potential. If they could sort out the miserable, disinterested staff, get some proper plates, and not burn the coffee, it could be really good. The prices and the menu don’t match. At those prices I’d expect something more than just good pub food. The surroundings feel like it’s aspiring to be more than that. But food on impractical wooden boards and such gloomy staff aren’t...
Read moreJust home from louie browns for my daughters engagement meal. I have never been before so tonight was a first for me. The venue was beautiful it was beautifully decorated modern and also clean tidy and the toilets were clean. Unfortunately I won't be back the service was very poor. Our menu was to be picked and submitted the week before so plenty of time for staff to work out how many dishes were to be made and how much. The menu was ok not everyone favourites but 7/10 we were told to be there for 6 o'clock for starters would be served at 6. The wait between the starters and main was ridiculous some of the group didn't have starters so we had to wait over 1 hour for the mains to be served. The dishes all looked good but have definitely had better at a much cheaper price. Once everybody had finished their main meal we then had to wait another 40 minutes for the dessert to be given out. Most of the group were ready to leave without having their pudding because of the wait. 4 people didn't even receive their pudding and were asked several times by the same girl what they were waiting on to be told repetitively cheese cake and cream. Then they were told that the kitchen staff had had a nightmare with the cheese cake as it hadn't set properly.... only to be asked again you can have anything you want from the dessert list. Then to have 3 members of staff to appear with the 4 cheesecakes and ice cream after being told it was cheesecake and cream they were waiting on. We also all watched other customers come in to the restaurant to be seated and served then leave before we even had all of ordered meal's. I dont know what happened after that as I couldn't wait to get out of there and felt so embarrassed for my daughter and son in law. It was very much like they wanted us to spend more money at the bar so delayed the food. Very very...
Read moreVisited on Christmas Eve for lunch and opted for the set Christmas menu. In a group of four we covered all options from the starters, mains, and desert. The starter highlights were the fishcake and duck & orange pate, but there were no complaints regarding the roasted parsnip & lentil soup. My choice of the traditional turkey and trimmings main, was definitely the lowlight of the mains. It was disappointing in both presentation and taste. The plate was overwhelmed with rolled turkey slices heaped on mash potato (lumpy) surrounded by soggy roast potatoes, and a couple of large lumps of roasted carrot and turnip. I had one small pig in blanket and two very salty overcooked slices of stuffing. In comparison those opting for the daube of beef and pan fried salmon were delighted with their choices, making the trukey choice seem even more dissapointing. The highlight of the desert was definitely the lemon posset. The service was mixed with one notably good server whilst the others appeared not to want to be there and unable to smile. Our table of four positioned enroute to the toilets left us feeling a bit like we were in a corridor. The lighting at this table was also poor, accentuating the feeling of being marginalised. A request to move to a better located and lit table was greeted with incredulity and challenge rather than a can do attitude. Overall a mixed experience but possibly worth a...
