Shimla Cottage — Restaurant in Scotland

When we entered we were greeted by a nice chatty older gentleman who apparently done deliveries. When asked to be seated we were told half an hour wait, which we weren't willing to wait, so it quickly changed to 10 minutes (told by manager who was extremely dismissive even when we were being nice).

Once seated, none of the staff except the waitresses would make eye contact.. Not a single male waiter could look us in the eye whilst listening to a query or taking an order. The food was decent by all means, we got a set meal for 2 which was £14 on the menu, we swapped the bread for peshwari naan which was an extra £1 (acceptable, but the bread wasn't even nice their was no coconut flavour what so ever just a thick paste on the inside). Drinks etc added our bill came to £25, but their was one "misc food £1.50" which didn't make sense because everything else on the receipt was accounted for.

When I asked a staff member to ask the manager for a quick chat (about service and also what this charge was) I was asked "why?" to which I was shocked, but continued to explain I would like to raise a question with him. I was again dismissed, and told he was too busy (I could see him counting money behind the bar, but too busy to attend to customers?)

So as I went over to speak to the "manager", laughable. He was extremely rude, I mentioned the fact the service was ridiculous and we felt like we weren't even wanted there never mind feeling like valued customers (staff members were overwhelmingly lovely to everyone else except my partner and I.) I asked about the additional £1.50 charge as I couldn't figure out what it was, and he told me "we charge for food containers, 50p per container and you're taking away".. So I asked him to explain the maths as their was one container in the bag and a small plastic bag along with a paper one. I was again shut down as he kept repeating "but you're taking the food away we charge for packaging", he simply couldn't break down the charge.. All in all I felt let down, humiliated as we were treated like scum. The manager did not help settle the situation but instead basically made us pay and turned us away.

I always spent lots of money in very expensive places and get the best standard of food and service combined.. Went here for a quick lunch and was totally gobsmacked with everyone's attitudes towards every question asked from the second we walked in the front doors. Disgusting attitudes all round. Superb! Absolutely adore this place! We went yesterday and it was our first time going. We arrived just as they were opening. They speak excellent English and they are so polite and courteous. For anyone who travels by public transport like we do, the train is literally right behind the restaurant, just a minute walk from their door. They gave us complimentary(!) popadoms, onions in some kind of sauce and 3 chicken wings which are absolutely delicious! We ordered two cokes and they brought us over two coke glasses with ice and (the best part) a straw. We usually have to ask for a straw but they thought of everything. The food is delicious and if you don't know what to have, tell them what kind of things you like and they will be more than happy to recommend some things to you. We wish we had done that! Aha. I have come here regularly since its refurbishment many years ago. I believe shimla cottage has dramatically improved over the years. The food portions are just right now, so I hope they aren't reduced further. The prices are still outstanding and I hope they remain so. I love the quality of food here. If I was to leave any sort of constructive criticism it would be to have a table booking service. This may help with the issues during busy times. Management can then plan staff requirements better. Replies to some of these reviews are also poorly handled and appear quite rude, which I know first hand does not reflect the the attitude of the staff on site.
