If you're a tourist without a guide, stear clear, they clearly know who you are. We were a group of three, two of us had great food but unfortunately the experience was very poor and the third member of our party had a terrible experience. When we first arrived and were seated, it took beyond average time until we were asked for drinks. In the opposite light we were asked if we were ready for food within the minute of being given a singular menu. We felt as though it was an inconvenience to ask for more time and maybe a second menu. A waitress collected our glasses whilst we waited for our food but we had to ask the waitress for a drink as she started walking away, she turned away after each person ordered a drink and we had to say excuse me after each person asked. One drink turned up incorrect however there was no offer of replacing it for the correct one so we just drank it. When the food arrived, two dishes were great but the trio of salmon salad was actually a selection of salad rolled up quite nicely with a tiny side salad. Unfortunately, not a salad. We explained this to the waitress saying we expected a salad, not a salmon platter, and if we could swap for a salmon sandwich to which she agreed. The dish was shortly returned exactly the same however with a load of salad thrown on top of the rolled up salmon. It was very disappointing. We explained after our meal we were upset and it wasn't what we ordered, the manageress came over to ask 'what is the problem?' to which we explained. She simply said that is how we serve a salad and wouldn't recognise that it simply wasn't a salad. She quite clearly was losing her patience when we asked to see the menu again to double check, the whole experience was uncomfortable. From beginning to end we felt like a guest in someone's house who didn't want us there and then when we were upset about it they acted as if we were unreasonable and an inconvenience. They clearly had the opinion they would never see us again as we were English. Rather than things escalating, we paid full price. Would absolutely not recommend unless you're a local Scot. Go down the road to the fish and chip shop with a bar...
Read moreIf you're looking for an unforgettable experience at a pub, this might just be the place—unfortunately, it’s unforgettable for all the wrong reasons. The barman here seems to have taken up hospitality as some sort of social experiment in how to repel customers as quickly as possible. Imagine our surprise when, before we could even glance at the taps, we were shooed to our seats with the finesse of a drill sergeant barking orders.
Undeterred, we settled in and ordered our drinks. Excited to try a rare ale on tap, we stepped outside only to be met with a pint that could generously be described as "character-building." Returning to the bar to politely request a swap, I was treated to a masterclass in condescension, complete with a lecture on my apparent lack of taste. After much grumbling, I settled on a Guinness—only to be told it was too pricey for the likes of me. The compromise? A pint of Tennant's, delivered with all the grace of a shot-putter at the Olympics.
As if that wasn't enough, the barman decided to cap off our visit by coming outside to glare at me for a solid 10 seconds—just in case I wasn't clear on his feelings about my presence. Needless to say, we won’t be gracing this establishment with our presence again. In fact, I’m fairly certain this guy missed his true calling—something involving scarecrows, perhaps, because hospitality...
Read moreA hidden gem! We stumbled across the Bothy whilst desperately searching for somewhere to eat on a cold February night. We were warmly welcomed by lovely staff members, and directed to our table. Table service throughout! Order taking was prompt and efficient. I had the fish and chips, which was delicious, fresh crispy batter, lovely haddock and fabulous chips! However, the star of the show was my fiancé’s meal - the steak and ale pie! This was a huge portion, beautifully cooked meat and plenty of it! Prices were bordering on £20 per main meal, which was more than reasonable for the price. The children’s menu was under a tenner for a main, pudding and a drink. Our child had picked the ice cream but was too full after dinner, and the staff got her a chocolate cookie to take away with her instead!! Overall, we had a fabulous meal, in a warm and cosy, well presented pub, served by some lovely staff and would love to visit again if we are...
