I've gotta talk about Michael. You'll see from most of the reviews how good the coffee is and the baked goods. It's what makes Unorthodox a much beloved staple in the area. But then there's the staff!
There are certain staff that go the distance. They've long since arrived at what constitutes good customer service then they just kept walking. Weren't in it for that destination. More for the journey and the people along the way. Michael is one of them.
He's kind of a part of the place. Seeing this lad when you walk in is a familiar comfort. And not just to regulars. Because I'm not one really.
I'm in. Then weeks or months can go by and maybe I'm back on no particular schedule. This dude is there being warm and welcoming without even trying. To everyone - all the time.
Unorthodox is a sort of unspoken community centre in Kinross. Michael seems to take care of it, most of the time, and the people that pass through.
The owners do a great job. I assume. Because this place is cared for. Michael might even be one. I don't know. I never asked. I just accepted there was regularly, practically always this mindful, kind soul tending to the place and the people in it.
Today I had myself a cappuccino - straight to Italy and back again - (not on the menu, but I was offered one and I was in the mood) then bought a dark chocolate brownie with cherry jam to go with it.
This brownie was rich, gooey and dense. I'm not sure if you had the same jam sponge in school that I did but it was like Reme from Ratatouille has gone to town on the jam from those, really emphasising the cherry and put it in this brownie. Perfect. Even better paired with my cappuccino.
This review is pretty wordy now.
To recap: good people, good ambience, heart of the community, great coffee, brownie that hit me with Disney nostalgia and Michael. What a good guy Michael is. If you're reading this cheers lad. We...
Read moreMy Girlfriend and I are absolutely in love with this cafe. We are originally from kinross, but have since moved away, and still make a point in coming back simply for a coffee from our favourite place. As with any establishment, Unorthodox Roasters is not without its qwerks; the shop itself is a little on the small side, but the atmosphere is both cosy and welcoming in the extreme.
The staff are knowledgeable and kind, happy to help with questions regarding any of their coffees on offer.
An important point to note here is that this is not a non-serious coffee shop. You will not find any syrups, creams, or other additives other than sugar. Simply put, they don't need it. Serious coffee is made here.
The food options are relatively varied and always tasty (the kitchen is small, so I feel it's fair that they can not offer a greater selection). I do feel, however, that there is a lack in unique vegan options, being that there is only one.
Overall I'd highly recommend this cosy cafe, as long as you are looking for a serious coffee, made by serious people, meant...

My wife and I were intrigued when we happened across this coffee shop on our way to Loch Leven. Quick to see if it was worth the visit, the Google machine suggested it was, so before leaving we popped in for a coffee.
Our friendly barista greeted us warmly and readily satisfied our curiosity at what they do by taking us through the back and showing us the raw beans from far flung locals which they roast in house using the beautiful roaster you can’t help but notice as you walk in.
He passionately described what they do and happily described what coffee we were each getting and it’s process (my pour over black coffee - Brazilian, and my wife’s espresso made creamy flat white - Columbian).
I got the impression these guys aren’t just another coffee shop. They are promoting coffee, and their style, across Scotland as well as to any customer willing to lend an ear as they take careful consideration in the making of your coffee, whatever way...
