I cannot begin to describe how poor our meal here was. 5 of us, varying in age from 23 to 67 sat down and stared blanky at the over complicated menu on the wall. It became comical about how little we understood but the variety was incredibly poor.
I had what I can only describe as Haddock in Dishwater with tomatoes floating around for my starter. For main, there was a choice between: Ox Cheek (which my mum had and found it so repulsive, she had to give it to my Dad who simply ate out of hunger due to the small dish sizes)
something with a whole bunch of random words which the only thing I could understand was Pistachio (of which I don't like)
pasta with pumpkin along with another bunch of ingredients no-one had a clue about. This is what I had and as a student, I can honestly say pasta and pesto on a budget was tastier. It was so bland, the pumpkin has zero taste but at least added a texture restbite to the chewy, thick pasta where one piece took about 10-15 seconds to chew through.
Sides must also be ordered to accompany the sparse you meal on the plate. We asked what each one meant and one which we were told was broccoli, turned out to be something like the consistency of overcooked chewy spinach. There was also potatoes (at £4) which arrived as 3 half boiled new potatoes rolling round a plate.
Pudding was just as disappointing with some sort of dry, heavy tasteless cake with a number of fruit thrown in, a creme brulee that was so runny it looked like half melted ice cream. I stayed simple with a scoop of vanilla ice cream (£3) which arrived sliding round a large plate with no presentation.
The house white was £25 (which for a cafe, seems a little steep compared to upmarket restaurants who have £15 house white)
Our bill came to £195 for 5 people, 5 starters and mains and 3 puddings. Considering when we left we all wanted to go to the takeaway next door because we were so hungry, it was definitely not worth the money.
The open kitchen (which left the restaurant very Smoky) and trendy decor definitely highlighted the fact this place is for it's trend rather than it's food. If you're a boring vegan with no taste pallate or desire for warmth at a restaurant and enjoy smoke in your eyes, this is the...
Read moreThis cafe has a prime location on "The Plains" in Totnes , a town in which I was educated and ran a business for 7 years ,..So I have an iffinity with this place. Saturday 18th February I took a trip to Totnes. I rode my motorbike to the bottom of the town and parked it opposite the cafe,.. It was a perfect day, sunshine and music playing,.. I thought , "life doesn't get better than this",.. I ordered a Cappuccino at the cafe, which I paid for in advance , the person who served me asked where I would like to sit, I replied "I will find a table outside". They said "o.k",.."Your coffee will be with you soon".
I sat for 15 minutes at the table , made 2 calls on my mobile to while away the boredom of waiting for my coffee and making the allowance for the fact that I was now chilling out in a town that was connected to Narnia,.. as Epic as it may seem ,..nothing happened!
When I went to investigate why it was taking so long to produce a small cup of coffee, the member of staff who I was initially served by appeared indifferent towards me.
To the owners of Curator Kitchen, I only asked for a coffee, was it such a big deal that the time it took to deliver it from your premises would have been no quicker than if I had ordered the coffee beans from Brazil?
An apology from your incompetent staff may have saved the day, but my feeling is that because I turned up at your establishment clad in motorcycle clothing and, God forbid, wielding a safety helmet, I was not the type of customer you would...
Read moreVERY small place and quite busy when we arrived (on probably the busiest corner in the town of Totnes). Took a while to order and we had to sit outside in the drizzling rain (par for half our days in the Devon area). Fortunately by the time our order was ready, we managed to squeeze into one of the three tables inside. The food and coffee were okay but not very warm. That along with sitting in the rain is mostly why I assign just 3 stars. Only when I visited the upstairs facilities did I notice that there seemed to be a much larger up (another flight! of narrow!) stairs dining area. Would have been nice to have directed to that ... but we were having trouble / pain climbing stairs, so that might not have...
