Very disappointed. The older lady behind the bar about 1.30pm Sat 07/08/21 was extremely rude. First of all when one of our party asked which items on the blackboard menu were gluten free, she replied "well you should know what's gluten free if you have that issue" "obviously the ceaser sald is gluten free..." erm... croutons...??? She had no clue. Even another couple ordering at the bar were shocked with her response. For a potentially life threatening illness, her reply was disgusting. Sat on a table in the garden area under a canopy due tilt he changeableweather, after receiving our food (which to be fair was quite nice, hence the 2 star rather than a 1 star review) we were then asked to move quite rudely by the same woman around 3.50pm, as they had a table booked under it at 6pm and they may be arriving early. No please, no thank you, just need to move. We did and thankfully the weather stayed nice enough, a younger lass came over as we were moving and was a bit more apologetic. We left the pub around 6.10pm, and noone had arrived to use the tables... We have used the Catherine Wheel many times over the past 10 years, sadly we will never return. This woman spoilt many peoples day yesterday, incorrect food orders, bad attitude, starters and mains arriving at the same time and refused to be taken back, she was just rude. If this is who you leave in charge of a hospitality venue, I feel for its future. For info, hey had 6 tables outside totalling 20 people, 3 tables having food, so it wasnt too busy. And theres no excuse...
Read moreA really lovely little country pub, we sat inside (behind a partition, so it was quite easy to be forgotten round there), there was a lovely large outside area that looks perfect for sunny days. The waitress did forget to put our order through, it wasn't busy but I do understand that we can easily get distracted and forget things sometimes!
I have to say, I was astonished and somewhat disappointed in the 'special' burger that I ordered - costing a whopping total of £15.95. For this price, I was expecting to be blown away. Instead, I received an extremely substandard bun with some cheese thrown in, a bit of poor quality meat and a tomato. It was really, really shocking. I'm afraid I can't give any justification to the price, unless that the chips were worth a lot more that I would have expected.
I hate to be one of 'those' customers who reference their food experiences as a comparison, however, I do work in a beer and burger restaurant in the pricey East of London - serving our classic burger from £9, with a portion of fries for 2 adding an extra £3. I have uploaded an image of both burgers to help understand my disbelief.
Sorry to bare such a poor review but I really feel the food and prices seriously need to be reconsidered...
Read moreWow, google and TripAdvisor reviewers - how wrong can you be? We headed to The Catherine Wheel for their well reviewed garden pizzas but alas, they were not available until 5pm later that day. My family was hungry after a 4 hour walk so we decided to order off the Spanish-inspired pub menu. We waited 40 minutes (far too long) for deep fried, cardboard-textured, sloppy and energy-draining food. After a long walk, this cooking did not satisfy. On any level.
We were told that the Spanish menu was created by two previous chefs, Spaniards called Juan and Juan. They would be ashamed to be associated with the Gambas Pil Pil currently being served. The prawns were okay, to be fair, but the sauce was a watery, tasteless, greasy pool of yuck. I fished the prawns out. When asked how my meal was, I mentioned to the staff member how far removed from an actual Gambas Pil Pil dish my food was...he just smiled apologetically and mumbled something about mentioning it to the kitchen. My husband said his burger tasted like old leather.
Saving grace were the friendly staff. If we are ever in lovely Goring again, I'll head to one of the cafes.
Avoid 'TCW' for food. Poor value for...
