The Duke of Wellington is a pub person’s pub. What I mean is that it is everything your expect … a good selection of beer, the usual pub food, wooden and uncomfortable seating, a staff that knows their stuff, but they were quite slow in taking orders, checking in and even asking about drink refills. But, what makes the pub what it is for tourists is its location just a 5-minute walk from the most popular hotels for leaving on a cruise out of Southampton. All of that said, my wife and our friends are very glad we made this our one dinner stop in Southampton. IT looks like there are lots of other pubs up a few more blocks along the main shopping area, but they all look to be more commercial. This place knows its place in the world. Now, as for the food, I had fish and chips and while I was happy at the time, I would later have much better fish and chips at several other pubs in Scottland and Ireland on this vacation. The fish piece was large by American standards and small by British pub standards. The chips (fries) were average at best. The mushy peas that I added as a side were the highlight of the meal. We also had a sticky toffee pudding at the end and found it to be quite adequate, but again we have had much better. So, for us the Duke of Wellington was a 5 for location, a 4 for pubness, a 3 for food quality and a 3 for service. But, I still say if you are leaving on a cruise and have a desire to launch into British food, go here.

Great experience, great food, and the gentlemen serving effortlessly tag teamed the meal. We split the ploughman, the lamb and mint pie of the day, and the chicken katsu curry. On the pie, while the lamb filling was tasty, it was the tender crunchy crust that stole the show for me. The curry was very flavorful, without being spicy, over crispy fried chicken (comes with thinly sliced hot pepper on top if you want a little kick!) And what can I say about The Duke's ploughman - can confirm it's big! Little bit of everything, mix and match pickled, fresh, creamy, crunchy, soft, savory, salty. Perfect to nosh with a few friends over drinks. Only downside that despite being listed as a sharable, when the server brought it out he didn't give any individual plates and we had to ask. But really that tiny misstep was the worst thing all night. Charming pub, a variety of drinks and food to match.

This is a great spot for some food in a very historic pub in Southampton! It is on the small side with a bar area and then a dining area toward the back so I would recommend booking if you're keen to visit as it did start to fill up! Service was fab, the staff were really friendly and the food came out very quickly! The menu is quite new and we found the staff knew their stuff and were happy to answer questions. We went for the fish and chips and the Thai red curry. I would say, if you're going for the curry- it's not quite what I've had in the past with a typical creamy Thai sauce, more of a thicker curry with potatoes and cauliflower. Still very yummy but not quite what I had in mind (which could absolutely be on me). We tried the sticky toffee pudding which was amazing and great for sharing! Drinks wise, we'd really recommend the Navy Wings beer with a touch of rum!

Please don't go here. The landlord was really really nasty. The landlord aggressively asked us to leave because we hadn't ordered food?? Honestly, wed never been asked for our order, given menus or even told they were doing food at that time. But anyway. He came and leaned over us, and aggressively asked us to leave. No warning, nothing. It was really scary to be honest because this man came out of nowhere and he didnt say who he was. I felt pretty unsafe and thought maybe he was a drunk person. . Anyway. After that weirdly aggressive experience (been going to pubs in the uk all my life and never ever has this ever happened) we got ready to go. My friend went to the bathroom. We got our coats on ready for him to get back. But before hed got back the landlord came back! Omg i have never been so scared. I thought he was going to attack me. I was shaking. The pub went silent. The table next to us left - ironically they were actually going to order food for 7 people but they were really disgusted at the landlord. We also would have ordered food, had we actually been given the option to. Obviously before the landlord came over. Anyway. He started accusing us of having not ordered enough drinks. Despite having 2 rounds in one hour? And not ordering food despite having probably sat watching us and never offering menus, to take an order or mentioning that they actually did food and would we like any. . I was shaking half with fear, half just shock from being spoken to in such a way by a grown man. . Wow. Not in all my life have i been treated like that. I honestly cant think of any way we actually acted that was wrong. I dont normally write reviews. But I am really upset by what happened. We were two quiet couples who'd gone to a pub to catch up. We hadn't done anything wrong. And then this man had come over, without introducing who he was, and started yelling at us to get out. Writing it down it feels a bit ridiculous that this actually happened. But I feel like i owe it to write a review to warn anyone else. Dont go here. The landlord is unreasonable and aggressive. Dont put yourself in a position where you're around this man as i...

Sunday dinner - 16/4/23 Upon arrival 1st drink ordered Orange juice and lemonade for the driver, lad said they had no orange juice. Not a good start. Then grumpy camp man came to take food order, Beef, Pork or chicken, I asked whether the Beef was medium/rare. He replied no well done, so then I asked if there was any crackling with the pork. He said it depends if there is any left, I asked him to go and ask. His reply a curt No. So I had chicken, my sister and her husband had Beef. Food arrived on table, lad immediately came over to ask if everything was alright, I hadn't started, and said I'd let him know. Cheap instant gravy swimming all over everything, 5 white potatoes, not a brown crispy peice anywhere, chicken all shredded. 2 small pieces of mushed brocoli, a table spoon of sliced mushed carrot, cooked any longer and they would be pureed. A from frozen Yorkshire, the only thing that was acceptable was the stuffing. £14.50 a head - Complete rip off. The camp one, who I later found out was the licensee breezed past, said that he asked us if all was good. He didn't. I complained and said the dinner was not satisfactory, and asked for my dinners price to be reduced, stating what I thought was wrong with the dinner, the camp one Rusty, was extremely rude, saying you can ask for a discount but you ain't getting one.Everything I pointed out, he just kept saying AND,Really bad attitude, Upon leaving I said to him as he was leaning on the bar, you can tell your boyfriend, that the meal you just served, was not even up to a £2.99 Weather'spoon standard, with that, the man behind the bar shouted I'M HIS HUSBAND, and another fat women was in my face, saying she found my complaint offensive, with that Rusty shouted, -,I'll deal with it, I was standing at the door, just about to step outside, he commanded Get Out, and don't come back, to which I replied as now outside anyway, what on earth would make me want to come back here. As walking away, he called me an old Queen, Lol this place is run by 2 of the Naffest Queens Ever -£14.50? Give it a...

How disappointing! Not been here for 12 years when it was a pleasure. Now it's not at all welcoming, the individual (manager) behind the bar clearly is not happy or comfortable in his job, none of the jovial friendly host for him! Ordered 2 lots of fish and chips accompanied by garlic bread with added cheese which according to the menu was an additional £0.50 however the charmless individual decided it was an additional £1.50 and wasn't happy when I pointed out the menu price stated. He then looked at how much it was to add cheese to a burger which was actually £1.50 however as I wasn't ordering a burger I was slightly confused and told him as per the menu I'll have the 50p option which he grudgingly did. While waiting for the food, an old lady behind the bar(other manager) and Mr Happy were discussing adding cheese to food with her explaining that a burger took more additional cheese than a garlic bread, on the job training at it's best! Then the food arrived with no cheese on the bread which I then queried with the manager/trainee who told me it had melted into the bread. There was no cheese visible as per a normal garlic bread however I have to admit there was a vague cheesy taste to it. The final bit was the waiter who left the food asked if we required any sauces so we asked for tarter and ketchup. The ketchup appeared and that was it. The food was okay but at the prices they charge it should be excellent, blew me out the water etc. not just okay. Sadly this is not the case. We spent about £50 on 4 large wines and the food so it's not a cheap option but it was a poor attempt at running a pub and serving food and I would expect the management will change relatively quickly and hopefully this will happen before the current team do too much damage to a historical part of Southampton. Did we feel welcome, no. Were we an inconvenience, probably. Would we recommend, not in the least. Best advice, take a picture while walking by and...
