We usually have Sunday roast at The Grapes but they were fully booked so we decided to try The Wellington. The food was tasty enough, and so we were a little baffled as to why there were very few tables occupied. The reason for this became apparent, the service. As we sat down and began to eat and chat over lunch, one of the staff brought out a hand-held hoover and began to hoover food from the floor at the table next to ours, so our conversation ended as we couldn't hear each other. I definitely don't want to hear hoovering when I go out to pay for my Sunday lunch. At no point did the staff member approach us to apologise in advance or after for the interruption, and why on earth could they not use a dust pan and brush? After we finished our main course our plates sat on top of each other at the end of the table for over 15 minutes. I thought this was odd as there were no other occupied tables around us and 3 members of staff were standing nearby talking. Suddenly, right in the middle of our conversation a different staff member yelled as she approached us "Have ya finished then?" 1. It was obvious we had finished as both plates were empty on top of each other at the end of the table. 2. Polite customer service dictates an approach with "Excuse me, let me take these plates for you. Are you ready for you dessert? We had pre-paid at the bar for the 2-course main and dessert, but we waited over 25 minutes and eventually had to ask a third member of staff for our dessert. "Oh, I'll go and find out for ya" - no apology. Then another staff member came over, also barging into our conversation "I've asked in the kitchen for ya, so it should be out soon" - again no apology. At this point I wanted to ask for a refund for my dessert as I wanted to leave but my dinning partner wanted to stay for their dessert. The waiting-on staff at The Wellington need training in customer service and common courtesy. Needless to say, we both agreed that we would not be retuning, and we suspect this has been the experience of past diners as the number of empty tables were testiment to this. Such a shame as the food is tasty and pub is lovely, but the staff made me feel extremely...
Read moreVisited here today for food and it was the worst experience of my life. Pub smelled like a dirty mop. Dog bowl with dirty water / hairs in left right by our table. And the food was ridiculously over priced. We paid almost £30 for ONE mixed grill and what we got was disgusting. The steak was burnt - not well done or overcooked proper burnt. The so called gammon was as flat as a pancake; I imagine the cheapest possible form of gammon a pub could buy. And the sausages were clearly chippy sausages - for almost £30 I was expecting a lot more. The starters came out barely warm but tasted ok. The fish and chips was vile - the fish was still swimming in the sea! It was soggy and watery and soaked my chips and plate. I literally had to remove the fish off my plate and soak it up using a napkin. The fish was also pink- ish inside so half got left. No one came to check on the food. No one came to ask if we was satisfied so we wasn’t given the opportunity to return the food unless we approached staff ourselves and we didn’t want to make a scene so just left. The meal cost approx. £60 - I was shocked at the overprice especially because the food was vile. Massively disappointed. Don’t know what’s happened because last time we visited here, from what I recall,...
Read moreBooked a table for 4pm and when we arrived there was nobody eating so we ordered with trepidation in case the lack of diners was a bad sign. How wrong we were! The quality of the food was excellent and it was all prepared to a good standard. With a little attention to detail in terms of presentation, the wellie would really be a place to rave about. The presentation did not in any way detract from how nice the meals were I might add. Portion size was good and the wait wasn't long at all. For the price, the value for money is very good. We will definitely go back. The two ladies who looked after us were very friendly, helpful and attentive and scored extra service points for asking was everything OK with our food 5 Mins after we started to eat. This is vital to ensure a great customer experience and not enough waiting staff do this,so hats off girls you did a great job. The beers we had were nice and fresh and crisp which means good cellar practices and the shandy was well proportioned. Desserts were lovely although the sauces had bled a little bit in the heat. Heating the brownie for the top of the sundae is a lovely touch as well. All in all, a great meal in a nice clean friendly place at a decent price. Highly recommended. Well...
