June 2024 Okay before I say anything it's good food, but I'm home and hungry. I enjoyed a tiny portion of salt baked beetroot, really tasty but truly tiny and not cheap. I then had the gnocchi, I counted 5 bits of it, again tasty but not filling, I should have ordered some bread I suppose. I saw the fish and chips go out, huge! So I think it may be what you order that determines the size. The rest of my party were happy with the mains, slightly disappointed with starters. Two things that really annoy me, I'm not a guy please stop calling me "guy, drives me bonkers. I get it's being friendly but it's annoying calling women a man! And I'm a vegetarian not vegan, I miss a meal without everything missing! But the staff are friendly, the food really nice (not cheap and sometimes small portions) and nice outside and in. We didn't have pudding and didn't see the choices so I can't comment on them. I've come home to have something here with a coffee.
2022 We used to really enjoy this pub but on our last visit we were told they stopped serving food at 5pm, it was a Sunday! We had to move on so I can't say how good it is now. My advice is to book ahead and plan, really not a spur of the moment place now as it is very popular. Serving times are normally up to 9pm on all other nights but Sunday so don't get caught out. Last time we ate there it was really good and, of course, great beer/cider, and wine. Well worth being better organised than us and booking ahead, Romsey is still not a "let's just go out to eat" Town and if you have a destination in mind...

Read moreThis is the sort of place you can imagine Jack Aubrey & Stephen Maturin supping at on their way to Woolhampton - vaulted Georgian ceilings, wood panelling, and paintwork all in keeping with the era. Outside it looks the part too with a big bay front - it feels authentic and unchanged, and probably is.
They'd probably like the food too, although by their appetites 3 courses would count as a mere starter. They'd also scoff at the gluten-free options which are extensive and tasty - always at least 4 starters, 4 mains, and sorbet for pudding. Gluten-free fish and chips are particularly good - very fresh fish and a crispy batter made with gluten-free ale.
For the non-coeliacs the food is well-presented, tasty, and good honest pub grub taken up a notch or two. For locals who remember the fabulous Ship Inn at Owslebury it reminds me of that fine establishment in it's heyday. Expect pies, roasts, good fish options and tasty puddings. Range of ales is also very good.
We're delighted to find somewhere who can cater for our gluten-free requirements and will be visiting time...
