Very welcoming and accommodating reception from the bar, willingness to accommodate awkward dietary requirements that aren't allergy related.
Visited at five pm on an overcast and chilly summers day. It was relatively quiet but the surroundings and views in the tranquil setting along the river overlooking the weir and lock drew us away from the town. The parking was ample (weather affecting trade may have been on our side).
A small menu selection of well chosen options not generic wholesale offerings and varied choice of flavour and side dishes. Not a large chain menu with pages upon pages of options but enough of a range of choices well selected to make choosing a battle. The varied simple menu led to a choice of the venison burger or lamb shank for myself and lasagna or pulled pork with eastern salad for my partner............
That's where I get complicated as I have a pre diabetic diet of basically low carb no sugar. The bar staff were absolutely understanding, not a single huff, sigh or eye roll and the kitchen specially adapted to my requirements. Evidence and final proof was in the meal served completely tailor made perfectly adapted to suit.
My partner folded and went with lasagna. We work in the industry and are fully aware of supplier ping ding lasagna is a very easy and cheap meal option most places stock so we rarely opt for it. On this occasion the lasagna was clearly not a brakes or bidfoods microwave option and was served piping hot topped with various cheeses and a quality Béchamel sauce.
Quick, efficient and attentive service in a comfortable and clean dining area. Layout was designed to enhance the setting outside over looking the lock and docks on the Avon without overcrowding tables and sacrificing "elbow room".
Overall the combination of setting, choices and meal served was a perfect experience not of fine dining but correctly priced quality food in an...
Read moreDon't be fooled by the photos on the website!! I booked this place a month in advance for a birthday lunch for my husband. We couldn't have been more disappointed. 75% of The Boathouse is CLOSED (as at 22nd July 2021). The only available seating is outside - we were undercover in what felt like an underground car park. Furniture dirty and shabby, our table had things living in it! I got bitten several times in the hour and a half we were sat there. I cleaned our table with wet wipes on arrival, which came up black and bitty! Food took about 45 mins to arrive even though there were only a handful of tables occupied. My salad was grim, tons of rocket garnished with 6 small prawns, the tiniest sliver of watermelon and 3 raspberries. Lady on the next table sent hers back as the melon and raspberries were missing, so I guess I should be grateful for what I got. My husband ordered the lamb and chorizo with pigs in blankets. Undoubtedly Sunday's leftovers, the lamb was tough and reheated, the sauce so salty I think few people would have eaten it (luckily my husband doesn't mind loads of salt!) We both sat there in disbelief at our grotty table and awful food. I was desperate to show him the website so he could see photos of the place I had booked (the closed bit upstairs) but as there was no wi-fi I couldn't justify my choice for birthday lunch! When we asked for coffee after our meal we were told they don't serve hot drinks. The food comes out of a scruffy fire door so I doubt even their normal kitchens are currently being used. I totally understand that many businesses are operating differently because of Covid, but to not be informed of the situation when booking a birthday treat is unforgivable. There are so many nice restaurants in Tewkesbury, I feel cheated. Sadly, a birthday to remember for all the...
Read moreA recommended restaurant/bar in Tewkesbury. From the outside it looks closed down but we climbed the rusty steps anyway take care if you have a small dog as they may catch their paws in the holes. The restaurant has an outdoor deck which could be nice if the furniture was replaced and the place tidied up. We chose a table that had already been set but NOT cleaned. So i asked the waiter if he could clean it, which he di but only where the plates sit. (See photos) I decieded not to have the Roast at this point so instead i ordered a Cheeseburger with fries and Slaw just to be safe. The burger was actually quite good and cooked well, the Coleslaw was in a dish the size of an eyebath and i feel it was a leftover from the previous day as the outside had tanned and inside was white. I also noticed the one potato cut into Skinny fries was cooked in sone stale oil. The Roast's looked ok and as the family was ravenous they just threw it down. The youngest had a Chicken burger with no complaints but it had the same fries and Coleslaw and she thinks "Hungry Horse is good so i can't comment. 2 flat Cokes 1 Cranberry juice + Lemonade 2 Pints of Morietti £70.00 not well spent The location has lots of potential so use it. Ps the Loo's were a throwback to the...
