We discovered Pattard only by a chance remark by another restaurant that could not take us (they were hosting a 60+ sitting) that evening. Duly filled in the online booking (they do not take drop ins) and was confirmed (by email) soon after.
The restaurant impressed us right from the start. It is a dining hall with white walls, regularly spaced timbers that sits on a raised wooden floor (it used to be a milking parlour, according to the owners). This faces onto the kitchen area visible through a large rectangular aperture framed (appropriately) with a large gilded frame, which you walk past to get onto the dining platform. The ambience was light, warm, open dining space with the food preparation space proudly on display for all to see. It reminded me a bit of the Scandinavian approach to eating - clean spaces, good lighting, with good sound absorbing materials.
The food was locally prepared ingredients, e.g. seafood, lamb & beef, vegetable, prepared with slightly modern twists to give crisper crunches (honey-brushed duck), fresher bites (Granny Smith sorbet was mind-blowingly fresh!) with accentuated flavours and umami hits. The menu is perfect (about 5 or 6 options per course). I had the Texel Lamb rack, which, in effect, was lamb two ways - a rack of lamb and a shepherds pie accompanying it. The lightly smoked asparagus and vegetables had that slight firmness that is hard to replicate at home. My warm spiced apple pudding with its dark, treacley baked flavours was offset with a Granny Smith sorbet that brought out the intensity of the fudginess of the apple pudding. The whole experience was the perfect way to end our 2 week holiday.
Who is Pattard for? If you're looking for gut-busting Sunday-lunch style blowout, then this is not the place. If, however, you're looking for fresh, local ingredients prepared with a modern twist, playing flavours of each other, like some sort of gastronomic playground, then this is for you. This is the sort of fun that more people in the area need...
Read moreWe went to Pattards Restaurant to Celebrate our 10 Year Anniversary and also getting Engaged. We are both so incredibly glad we did as we feel as if we truly found an absolute GEM in the middle of the north Devon countryside.
The restaurant is very intimate with a fine dining feel. The menu is smaller but incredibly well produced a balanced to offer a mix of food but still offer a very high level finish.
I can explain enough how excellent the food was. The presentation was exceptional , the whole thing felt like a Michelin starred place you would see only in a movie. The dishes were complex yet simple. Portion sizes were perfect.
We went during the summer menu , which we were told is changed every 3 months to reflet the season. On the actual day there was only one other couple in the restaurant and by the time our main was delivered it was just us leaving us with a very intimate and almost curated experience all to ourselves. I would make sure to book ahead before visiting as for the past two week before our visit they were rammed.
We had the pasta and Scallops to start. We both had the Beef short rib for main and then shared two different desserts. 3 Courses are a MUST, you will do yourself a complete disservice if you do not experience it all.
The desserts are some of the most creative and unique things I have ever eaten. My Fiancée is quite fussy when it comes to desserts and she absolutely loved them.
The whole place is run by two people. A chef and front of house couple that are clearly pouring their absolute heart and sole into the food and dinning experience.
Truly lovely people, exceptional food, this is absolutely somewhere I would recommend anyone to go to if they are in or...
Read moreDan & Toni, thank you so much for your wonderful hospitality.
This fantastic little restaurant is situated in a secluded spot just beyond Hartland, well signposted and easy to park a very short walk from the venue.
Dan welcomed us with a warm smile as if we were old friends and we were seated in the small but cosy dining room. A drinks order was quickly taken and we were given time to peruse the mouthwatering menu before ordering a started & main each.
The starters arrived, I had the Gravlax and my wife the Scallops. Both dishes were absolutely delicious! We had a good wait then until our mains but we don’t mind as we are enjoying each others company and respect the fact that the whole kitchen & dining room is run solely be Dan & Toni, who personally I think are doing an absolutely amazing job.
Our Main courses arrived and we again were not disappointed, Michelin star worthy cooking and presentation. My wife had the Beef Sirloin (Dan telling us where it came from which in itself is great), I had the Hake which was to die for and we shared two sides which were both a lovely accompaniment to our meals.
Absolutely stuffed, wine nearly finished and the only customers left we decided that there was room for pudding after perusing the desert menu. My wife had the Dark Chocolate & Pistachio Tart and I had the White Chocolate Parfait…yeah they were again top class in delivery!
We left Pattard Restaurant having found a hidden gem, having made new friends and completely fit to burst! Dan & Toni you should be so very proud of the fantastic job you’re doing, we can’t wait to job you again soon and thanks again for a truly wonderful...
