The Spice — Restaurant in Tunbridge Wells

I always enjoy getting to review somewhere I haven't been before. I'm going to try and be firm but fair, like I am for all my other reviews!

First off, I like the presentation of the papadams/poppadoms - you get a lot of (tasty) dips with them. I particularly like the "red stuff" (tamarind sauce) and the lime chilli. The starters were also well presented too.

Now, here's the bit where I get a little critical. The main (Chilli Chicken) tasted "vinegary" and texture a little bit on the "watery" side for what was supposed to be a hot dish. And my dining partner had a very similar comment, like the same "base" sauce is used for each dish. If I could suggest improvements, the sauce could be a touch thicker and a little spicier. The potato was a bit on the dry, chalky and bland side too.

Back to the nice bits though - the onion bahji were amazing, so definitely order some of those. And the service was good, friendly and personable too - we weren't waiting too long for anything, even when things seemed a little busy. Toilets were nice and clean too.

Verdict: Good service, Good papadams, good starters, otherwise seems a little "stuck in time" and caters towards an audience that has very little tolerance for spice or heat.

Oh, and for disclosure: I am not related to any other restaurants, so a little confused by the "PR stunt" response, but my group are something of "curry clubbers" and we really will rate or benchmark each restaurant or...

Excellent! The Spice in Camden Road is a gem. Last night a party of 9 of us enjoyed a truly top quality array of curries and side dishes at this busy restaurant. Ingredients were fresh and beautifully cooked and well presented. Some of us like our curries particularly hot - the Naga Chicken delivered on every level (I speak as a Naga curry expert)! Service from start to finish was spot on, polite and attentive and the recommendations of different dishes were really welcome suggestions and thoroughly enjoyed. At the end of the meal we were given the opportunity to a chilli taste challenge - mind blowing heat, a huge amount of fun for those of us that took part causing a lot of laughter and chilli tears! My new go to curry house!

Had a takeaway from here after my normal curry house changed owners and I had what may have been the worst curry of my life...

But The Spice redeemed my faith in Indian cuisine!

Tasty curry with the perfect amount of spice and flavours. I had a chicken pathia which was much spicier than I was used too however it was still exploding in flavour and a dish I will most definitely have again.

Onion barjies were perfectly cooked to be crispy and soft and very pleasent. The whole meal was great and their loyalty scheme is a nice added touch too.

No complimentry beer which I'm used to at curry houses when I order such a large meal, however as they gave the money off voucher I guess I can't complain.

All 6 of us enjoyed the curry and it was a great meal!

Will definitely be coming again maybe even to dine...
