I recently visited Mother Hubbard's in wakefield, and I have to say, it was an absolutely delightful experience. The star of the show was, without a doubt, the fish. Cooked to perfection, it had a golden, crispy batter that was light and not at all greasy. As soon as I took the first bite, I was greeted with a wonderfully flaky and tender fish that tasted fresh and full of flavour. It was everything you’d hope for in a classic fish and chip meal. The chips were equally satisfying, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. They paired perfectly with the fish, creating that authentic, comforting experience that you look for in a great chippy. Portions were generous, offering great value for money, and I left feeling full and satisfied. Beyond the food, the shop had a welcoming, traditional atmosphere. The staff were friendly and efficient, providing prompt service despite a steady stream of customers. The place was clean and well-maintained, which added to the overall positive experience. If you’re a fan of fish and chips, Mother Hubbard’s is definitely worth a visit. The quality of the fish alone makes it stand out among other chippies in the area. Whether you’re stopping by for a quick takeaway or looking for a hearty meal, you won't be disappointed. Mother Hubbard’s truly delivers on the classic fish and...
Read moreI've been to a few different Mother Hubbards now, but have been to the wakefield one more than any others. The staff are always really friendly, patient whilst I'm taking ages to decide and always really helpful. The lady who works there is really nice. Their fish and chips are the best I've had on the mainland (I'm from an island where fish is very fresh) - it has always tasted fresh and beautifully cooked, the batter is fantastic and the fish is big and meaty. They are more expensive than I remember fish and chip shops being, I don't think fish and chip shops are a budget option anymore, but at least with Mother Hubbards you get good quality for your money.
I've had fish and chips from the Barnsley Mother Hubbards too, it's the same good quality and good service. And I've had from the Leeds one too, it was a bit of a dive in comparison, but it is in Harehills so what can you expect. The staff were distracted, arguing on their phone or with colleagues in the back, took ages to be served, felt unsafe inside and outside the shop to be honest, and the quality was not Mother Hubbards that I know in Wakey or in the new Barnsley one. It was a while ago since I was in the Harehills one though so maybe...

I recently visited Mother Hubbard's for a classic fish and chips meal, but unfortunately, it fell far below expectations. At over £11 for a standard fish and chips with a butty (or bap, as some might call it), it was already on the pricey side, especially since no drinks or sauces were included.
Upon taking the food home, I discovered the chips were cold, and the fish was overly greasy with an excess of oil that soaked through. The quality of the fish was subpar, and the overall meal felt poorly prepared.
Regrettably, the experience didn’t just end with disappointment. Shortly after consuming the meal, I began feeling unwell, experiencing severe stomach discomfort and sickness. A visit to the pharmacist suggested it might be food-related, possibly food poisoning, though it wasn’t confirmed.
This was truly disheartening, especially for a brand that claims to offer quality fish and chips. For the price, I expected far better, but instead, I was left with a negative experience I wouldn’t wish on...
