We had a little walk around Milford Marina one afternoon recently and it was a lovely autumnal day. I said to my husband “ooh, I really fancy a nice bowl of soup and some crusty bread!” My husband agreed too. We weren’t massively hungry but needed something to get us through until dinnertime. Every place we popped into didn’t have soup on their menu until we stumbled on Freckles Café! I’d been here once before with a friend and we’d had a lovely cheese ploughman’s platter which had been so big we had to have doggy bags to go home with. You know it’s a great place when you want to take your leftovers home with you. We received a very warm welcome when we arrived and were seated in a nice cosy corner overlooking the marina. I was so pleased when I spied on their specials board that they had Red Pepper Soup and Welsh Cawl. This satisfied the vegetarian in me and the carnivore in my husband. Our order was taken by a lovely friendly gentleman and he left us to enjoy the surroundings. The café is very vibrant and cheery and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves eating and chatting. It’s clearly a popular place because it was busy, so we were lucky to get a seat. I looked around at what people were eating and the food looked great, simple but wholesome and wonderfully sized portions. Some of the staff were having their lunch, which I thought was so nice to see them eating in the same place as their customers and enjoying the food they’d prepared and served. Our soup came out very quickly and looked and smelled wonderful. Mine came with a cheese toasty and my husband’s Cawl with a thick chunk of fresh white bloomer and butter. The soups were gorgeous, so tasty, so filling and it was clear to us that we had come to the best place to eat home cooked, wholesome quality food with locally sourced ingredients. This really is a wonderful café to meet friends, catchup, relax and enjoy a lovely atmosphere with fabulous tasting food and happy friendly staff. I didn’t mention the cakes, although we were too full to sample any, but their cakes looked knockout. Go check...
Read moreWish i could say the atmosphere was as enjoyable but I can’t unfortunately. Very uncomfortable scene going on behind the counter a few weeks ago, where a young girl (I assume a trainee) was being spoken to terribly by the owner or manager I’m not sure which. A line was forming at the till, the girl was very polite letting us know it was her first shift at the cafe, apologising for the wait and trying her best to take orders whilst looking on the verge of tears with the way she was being scolded by the manager which was very difficult to see. I Heard the manager using foul language, shouting at the girl and overall having a very poor and odd attitude. the whole scene was embarrassing to put it bluntly, nothing bothers me more, than to see staff at a business being mistreated. Now I obviously don’t know what was happening behind the scenes but to be honest i don’t really care to know because whatever was happening, no one should be spoken to that way wether there’s a rush or not there’s absolutely no excuse for it and seeing the girl being spoken to in a very degrading way by that woman really got to me I’ve never heard anything like it in my life. There’s no reason anyone should be treated that way for any reason and if you have issues with staff it should be dealt with in a professional private manner, without letting your personal anger issues take over which absolutely did not happen in this instance. Down here for a holiday and can’t say I recommend this cafe or will ever be returning after the nastiness I witnessed from the manager/owner. The attitude towards staff is disgusting and I can’t put my money into a business with higher ups who believe bullying is...
