Harvester Gowerton Swansea — Restaurant in Wales

On entering ‘The Harvester’ Gowerton on 30/4/25, the person greeting us was so miserable and very slow finding us a table considering we were the only ones on the desk. The attitude was I really don’t care and I don’t want to be here, my first impression. We were sat down and waited about 15-20 minutes before someone asked us if we wanted a drink. We waited another 40-50 minutes for someone to take our food order. Wait for it - Food didn’t arrive for after an hour after that and my 84 year old Dad asked a lady walking past our table, when was the food coming, to be told in a very rude and abrupt manner, it was on its way. Shoving a dirty tea towel over her shoulder at the same time. I was furious that this person had spoken to my dad in this way. I asked our waitress who that lady was and was told she was Maggie the duty manager. That’s all I have to say to Maggie is shame on you, speaking to an older person like that. Not a very good advert for harvester or good impression for your staff to see. After over an hour, I asked our waitress Denise how long it would be again and told her I was very annoyed at the way Maggie spoke to my dad. Never had an apology off anyone. Denise then told us they didn’t have chicken enough for our orders and would I like to choose something else. Fuming- could they have not told us this at least an hour ago. I changed my order and after another 20-30 mins, our food arrived. I must say the food was ok in Gowerton but Morfa I found to be 100% better the food definitely tasting more fresh and hot and their customer service was amazing in Morfa too. Maybe the Manager from The Morfa could go over to Gowerton and give them some customer service lessons. May I say Denise our waitress was very nice. She was trying to plod on with all the chaos going on in the background. Our onion rings did not arrive so I told the waitress we never had them and told her could she please take them off the bill. I noticed there was a spillage by the buffet on the floor of sweetcorn and it was never cleaned or swept up. A definite slip hazard and not one member of staff acknowledged it at all. There was a person constantly filling up the buffet as I noticed people were waiting so long they were back and forth the buffet 3-4 times waiting for their food orders to arrive. Well done for keeping the buffet stocked up but my only criticism is make sure your uniform is clean before coming out to see customers, yours was not the cleanest. Again I took photos. Disappointed. Turned up on speck to be told restaurant was fully booked as it was last day of the 50%off day. Sat in bar to have our meal,had to ask for sticky table to be cleaned. Went up to bar to order the light lunch which was advertised online. Asked could dessert or drinks be added on at the end as didnt know how full we would be. Was told no can't do that in the bar. There was 3 of us and 2 said yes definitely dessert the other wanted a coffee which was advertised online as a swap. Lady behind the bar wasn't sure if we could do that but another lady came along and said sorry but that's the old menu and you can't do that anymore, I explained I had saw it online the evening before. She Stated it was a new menu now so I explained that it should be changed online then. She agreed to do it this once. (Not my fault the website hadn't been updated) we sat at a table and then had to go and ask about the salad bar as she didn't give us bowls. Walking bk from the salad station they had brought our starters. Had starter and salad and was enjoyable. Mains came a good while later which unfortunately only the meat and scampi was hot ,chips were lukewarm and peas stone cold, the grilled tomatoes also stone cold. The scampi and gammon was eaten but none of the sides. When the main was brought we had to ask them to please take the salad bowls and starter dishes away as they just walked away without taking them. No cutlery brought to us had to go ask where it was kept. . Then after waiting a while I informed the lady behind the bar we were ready for dessert and could our plates be taken away. Explained the food was cold and she explained I should have said as the food had been ate. I asked her to look at the plates as it hadn't been ate but she pointed out the gammon and scampi had. I didn't complain straight away as there was a number of people waiting at the bar to be served and only 1 member of staff. Didn't want to add pressure to her as she already seemed stressed. It was our error not booking on such a busy day and we didn't realise there was a money off voucher and it would be so busy. My point is they sit you in the bar with restaurant prices with no restaurant service. Been here a number of times and always an enjoyable experience but due to ill health hadn't been for a while. Honestly was one of the worse experiences I’ve had in a harvester. Me and my friend decided to come here as it was something different from our usual and thought it would a nice chill evening, but it was far from that. We got there around 7pm for our booking and noticed that it was busy and there looked to be very few staff on the floor. We both work in hospitality so we know how frustrating and stressful this can be, so made sure we were extra patient. We were sent to our table and I disclosed my citrus allergy, I cannot fault the care and attention the manager put in to checking what I could and couldn’t have and advising me on what to avoid etc. but they then started to use this as an excuse later on. Our starters arrived first and were fine, but instead of checking to see if we were ready for mains they brought them out when we were still halfway through our starters? There was no check backs to ask if we were ready for them, they were just brought to our table. We shrugged this off, but really there should have been a check back. Then, after our mains plates were collected and we informed the waitress we were interested in deserts (around 8:30/8:45). We then sat and watched as all the other tables that had been seated after us start to pay and leave. We finally ordered deserts around 9:15 and continued to watch as other tables left till we were the only ones left. When our desserts finally arrived around 9:45pm, we were told that it took so long because of my allergy. The only difference to my dessert and my friends (we had both ordered the rocky horror sundae) was a cherry on the top, so how that affected the time to make it baffles me. But we didn’t even eat them in the end, the glass it was served in was hot (like it had either been sat under the food pass or just come out of the dishwasher) the brownie was barely even warm and the ice cream had melted so much it was like soup. It purely wasn’t worth the time we waited for them. When we finally paid and left we saw that bar one table that was full of staff that had just finished their shift and another where they only had drinks, we were the last ones. So why did it take so long? The restaurant was quiet after about 8:30pm, so the wait time we experienced was unnecessary. It is such a shame as I have always had good memories of harvester, but this has completely wiped those and left me feeling annoyed and not willing to go back...
