Callenders Restaurant — Restaurant in Wealden

Our first visit was somewhat disappointing and I expect I'll be getting a bit of backlash in response. I note that anyone who is critical is accused of reviewing the wrong restaurant and their review history is examined. The owner should remember that a customer might review a business at any time after their visit, days, weeks or months. I tend to do my reviews when I've sat down with a bit of spare time on my hands. So, by way of mitigation, I would say we probably arrived too early at 12.00 to appreciate the restaurant properly. We thought we would try lunch as the restaurant is apparently open from 9.30. We weren't greeted and after lurking for a moment we spotted a young lady so I asked if it was ok to sit anywhere. Admittedly it was a cold miserable day, but we found the restaurant cold and smelling of damp with dirty stained carpets. The decor is very dated and tired and we sat down in the window but were too cold so tried moving. The set lunch menu didn't inspire us at all, was more like pub grub, although it was probably good value. We decided to have pate, which was nice, were offered more filter coffee but overall found the service lacking. We had the pleasure of dining at Callenders Restaurant on a Wednesday evening, and the experience was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with a friendly smile. The staff was attentive, friendly, and went above and beyond to make us feel welcome.

The food was perfect. Each dish was fresh, cooked to perfection, and bursting with flavor. And the chips were amazing! The best I've had in any restaurant. It's clear that quality ingredients and expert preparation are a priority here and I haven't come across another restaurant locally that matches the quality that is served here.

We were particularly impressed with how accommodating the restaurant was for our 11-month-old son. They provided a high chair and even prepared a mini portion of fries and some ice cream specifically for him under good will. This thoughtful gesture made our evening even more special.

Callenders has been on my door step for years. I have had many pints in the Grenadier opposite and walked passed this restaurant many times without giving it a thought. The truth is my subconscious mind had discounted it and prejudged the place. I was convinced that it was somewhere that I would not enjoy eating in. I certainly would not have booked a table there myself. However Saturday night my wife had booked a table for the family, my heart sank a little bit when she told me where we were going, however what a fool I was. The restaurant was clean well decorated and had a pleasant feel to it. All The staff were very friendly, efficient and talkative a lovely young lad primarily looked after our table. The food was piping hot and fantastic. The service fast and efficient. Our family had a wide choice of food from their menu and there was no complaints. It’s the best meal I have had for sometime.
