Good food, good coffee, nice atmosphere. The only real negative for me was the automatic "optional" service charge which is not obvious and not mentioned specifically before you pay so really isn't optional at all. I know people have varied opinions on this and I don't mind restaurants doing it so much when they make it clear at the time of booking but a coffee shop seemingly trying to hide it in the small print seems a bit off to me. I'd prefer an extra 20p on the price of a coffee. EDIT: Following a review of the breakfast menu, I note that the "optional" service charge is not mentioned at all so it's not legally optional. This is not good. To the owner, I refer you to my initial comment. Put the prices up slightly, remove the hidden service charge and pay your staff a living wage. If you don't want to do this, have the staff confirm before payment that the customer knows about the service charge and is happy to pay it. This is just basic manners. Oh, and if you're keeping the service charge, remove the tip jar from the counter. You don't get to double dip.

Poor poor service, very rude customer service. Rather than apologising for selling and charging for a sorbet rather than an ice cream (they can seem very similar), the sales person seemed affronted that I should complain and return it, maintaining that I was told that particular flavour was a sorbet, rather than part of the list of ice cream flavours she had reeled off, eventhough it was quite clear that I was interested in buying an ice cream. A simple apology and a recognition that the fault lay with them, rather than turning it around and putting the blame on me for having misheard, would have sufficed. Disappointing.

Drove 2 hours from Southend to Forest Row for a vet visit and found this place, and it was a true blessing! Finally, a Buddha Bowl that's made properly is found, quinoa, broccoli, sweet potato, beetroot and vegetables all in, fresh and crunchy topping with 2 amazing homemade sauces, beetroot and pesto. And that cake, I can't remember the full name now, but it's got rose flavour and pistachio in it. So soft, light and spongy. Eating out sitting by the roadside, looking up where a beautiful church stands in the corner on a junction. That whole experience is just unbeatable. Life is good!

I just gave this review and have now in the reply been accused of shouting at a member of staff, which completely never happened this is amazing, I am going to but in a complaint to fair trading about this accusation as this is an outright lie.i literally am sitting next to my two children who I went to Java & Jazz with, they can’t believe what was just wrote in response to the review, I am absolutely shocked by how bad this restaurant really is, so appalling, please read my original review and give this place a miss, and I am going to be interested in the slanderous accusations and what fairtrading have to say about this!

Let me reply to the rest

You have mentioned that your vegan pizza was super salty. You did pour 4 lots of chill oil onto it which itself is salty, this would make it super salty.

I put chilli oil on my pizza which I always do, never had this at any other pizza establishment. It was you either your pizza base or vegan cheese!

You said your son’s pizza was soggy. All of our pizzas are freshly made with our own dough recipe and no one has ever made this comment before as far as I am aware. I’m assuming that this was the pepperoni pizza which is naturally quite oily.

My son always eats this pizza and has never complained until he was at your restaurant.

I have reviewed the footage re the hairs and note that your son was leaning over his pizza and playing with his hair - perhaps it was one of his as all of our staff tie their hair back whilst at work. We did however offer to replace the pizza for you which you rejected and note that your son continued to finish the pizza.

The hair was infused into the cheese how could this be his, wow this is beyond even making sense! And he left the pizza!

With regard to our sever being rude and sassy, she did explain to you several times that swap out toppings are not charged for but additional toppings are. You swapped out normal cheese for vegan cheese and feta for mushrooms and then added an extra egg which IS chargeable and clearly on the menu as a chargeable item.

This was never explained and she agreed to simply swapping and this waitress I know personally and she isn’t the sassy one she is actually very helpful and nice, which is the only positive I can say about Jaza & Jazz!

We also gave you free drinks as per our current offer AND took the pizza off your bill, but you started shouting at our server, which we do not tolerate.

The drinks were part of your deal so are not free as otherwise I would have ordered them and paid for them as I do when ever we go and have a meal out, which is a lot as we like to eat out!

I’m happy to show you all of the footage of your experience and politely request that if you come back, you treat the staff with respect as they all work extremely hard and do not expect to receive this type of abuse whilst at work

I would like to see the footage, I will come in and you can show me, this outright lie as I always treat people with respect which is obviously something you guys don’t understand by throwing out false accusations about abuse when I come in I will film you video and then put it up on all my social media so local people can judge for themselves, as this is slanderous!

This is the original review!

I Just went to Java & Jazz with my kids for the first time in a long time, I have been told that Java & Jazz had gone massively downhill, by friends that live in the village, I used to be a one of my favourite places with good pizza so I thought let’s try it, My vegan pizza was super salty it tasted like fast food, my sons pizza was soggy and my other sons pizza came with its own hairs 😂 and then we got over charged and when we explained that these items shouldn’t be charged for as the girl who served us said we could swap toppings, the young lady was super rude 😂 my kid was like wow! What a sassy girl how rude and disrespectful was she! Not sure if this is the usual experience at Java and Jazz but after our experience I thought I would put this post up as that was just wrong, Java Jazz...

Rubbish food and what we did eat then made me sick when I got home……….don’t eat there.

Ate lunch here today, never in my life have I had just a disappointing experience. Very slow service, got up to order our food to see a handful of young people chatting away in the kitchen and serving area, oblivious to customers sitting at tables. Ushered back to our table and took our order, another couple came in and the situation repeated itself.. Coffee good despite the hair on the side of the mug, dirty fork which I replaced as staff still chatting away, saw staff leaning against kitchen equipment, no aprons, no hygiene gloves. Starters okay, my bruschetta was burnt easy mistake to make. My partners Broth was hot water with noodles and veg, no broth to be seen. I spoke to the staff, no apology at all, reordered to then have a pasta dish with a thin tomatoey sauce, 3 bits of chicken with lots of melted cheese, no taste or seasoning at all. No urgency at all to serve the second main, I had eaten half my pizza by then. I gave a staff member my name and number and asked the owner to call me as I did not want to pay for the meal. She said “ it’s on the house”, I was a tad taken aback by this and asked why, “due to the broth’. Fair enough… I wonder how many times she has said that…. Returned home and I start to feel sick, within one hour of eating the pizza I was violently sick, not once but three times, clearly the meat was not cooked on the pizza. The peppers and onion where crunchy so that now makes sense. I wonder if the owners, James or John will call me… shocking customer service and terrible food. Off to make a cuppa to get rid of that...

Really disappointing. Before we had our kids we used to visit fairly regularly and always loved it. We just took our son for the first time mostly so he could experience the calzone pudding. Booked a table for 4PM, we were seated for over 25 mins before anyone took our order (only 3 other customers in the restaurant) and one lady kept bringing us food that wasn't ours (before we had even ordered). When we asked for a drinks menu were told there's only 1 in the whole building which they couldn't find so we were told they just have 'the usual stuff to drink'. Our pizzas finally arrived and were so burnt on the base it was all you could taste. We also didn't get any plates despite there being 3 of us, so had to go and ask for some. When we then went to order dessert we were told the kitchen had closed so couldn't have anything. We understand it was a Sunday and they may close earlier than usual but someone should have told us at the time of booking we would only be allowed to order half a meal before you shut the doors.

To be honest, most of the staff seemed pretty disinterested. It was our first meal post covid and we felt more of an inconvenience to them rather than us supporting a local business. We did tell someone there of our disappointment, who was apologetic, but the whole experience has put us off...
