I was once asked where I go to eat out in Weston-super-Mare and I recognised that most times I go out to eat are in other places. When eating locally, as a family, we usually end up in Bristol, as part of doing something else. It doesn’t help that quite a few places that we use to frequent have closed down. So it was a nice to go out to eat at a local bistro in Weston-super-Mare, The Ginger Pig Kitchen.
The environment is certainly interesting with pipework and wooden tables and what felt liked random chairs.
The menu looked inspiring and interesting, and it was quite difficult to make a choice.
For my starter I had the Cauliflower Bhaji, which was served with mango yoghurt chilli jam and crispy onion. I got two bhaji, made from onion and cauliflower. They were crunchy and crisp outside and soft inside. I couldn’t really taste the cauliflower, but they were nice and spicy. I liked the crispy onion, but I do feel that it needed more yoghurt. Overall I did enjoy the bhaji and they were really tasty.
My main course was I think the house speciality, which was Woodbarn Farm pork belly. It was served with a GPK black pudding bon bon, mashed potato and a braised carrot. On the plate was also a scattering of green leaves, crispy onions and something else. It was quite a small piece of pork belly, but was well cooked. The cracking was crisp and crunchy, but wasn’t going to be teeth breaking. The pork was tender and tasty. The GPK bon bon was nice and meaty, I think it could have had a deeper flavour. I did like the use of crackling as the bon bon stick. The mashed potato was nice and creamy, but I would liked to have had a gravy with a deeper flavour, the same could be said for the braised carrot. On the plate was also a scattering of green leaves, crispy onions and something else. I am not sure what this was and what it added to the dish. It did add texture, but I was a little underwhelmed by this addition to the dish. Overall I did enjoy this plate of food and it was delicious.
I had a choice of desserts, in the end I went with the cheese and biscuits. I had three pieces of cheese, crackers, chutney, fruit, and celery. I did not eat the celery. Overall it was okay, nice cheese and nice accompaniments.
It certainly was a popular establishment and was full all evening. The service was excellent, warm and friendly. I really enjoyed the food, it was delicious and it is certainly a place I would...
Read moreI’m a few weeks late posting this, but we were visiting here from Swindon - admittedly, we usually go for a roast somewhere else but because their kitchen was closed, it opened us up to looking for somewhere new.
As one of the group is coeliac, I had messaged about 9 different places and this was the first one to respond and on the same day.
From the first point of contact, they were friendly, helpful and accommodating! They were able to adapt the roast to make gluten free.
When we got there we were early - we popped our head round the door and asked if we could come in slightly earlier and, of course, it was not an issue!
We were served by a magnificent team of ladies and our particular waitress was fantastic - so friendly, great with the kids, funny and nothing was too much trouble!
On top of that, I observed as I watched them each go round to every table and chat to every customer.
A couple turned up and had a guide dog with them and it was so lovely to see that nobody had an issue with it, in fact, the staff even fussed over the dog & sat and chatted with the couple.
I didn’t get names, but the blonde lady who I think was in charge this day, came and chatted with us asked about us, where we were staying, what we had been up to and really made us feel very comfortable.
The food… the roast was incredible. The meat was fantastically cooked, the veg was generous and I was honestly stuffed after eating mine. But with it tasting so good, I couldn’t resist ordering dessert!
I ate every mouthful - it was that good! They even let me have both ice cream and custard with my dessert! But honestly, I nearly had to be rolled out of the restaurant!
As well as this, I noticed they had a recipe for sangria on the wall behind the bar - I asked if it was available to order and they were more than happy to make it up for us!
Honestly cannot recommend this place enough and when in Weston, we will return!
Thank you to everyone who served us and made this such a...
Read morePIGS ARE KILLED IN GAS CHAMBERS
I dined at this place as a vegetarian, and had a tomato tagliatelle dish which was £17 and totally bland. No flavour whatsoever. I complained to the staff before paying the bill who ignored my comment and just said 'oh, was it, sorry'. Given I had left 95% of it, this should have been a red flag and should have not charged me full price.
Since finding out 90% of pigs are killed in gas chambers in the uk recently, I find it completely abhorent that places like this profit massively off these intelligent animals suffering.
If you eat pork, you are supporting the torture of these sentient beings in the most horrendous ways. When they are piglets, the males are castrated with no pain relief, their tails are docked also. Again, no pain relief. Mothers confined in farrowing crates for 5 weeks, emotionally broken and in pain. They're forced into carbon dioxide gas chambers at 6-8 months old where they feel like they are burning from the inside out.
