I felt really sorry for them.. we arrived for my birthday meal at 8pm, our first visit to this restaurant and we walked into a almost empty restaurant only one other couple in the place. The young waiter was friendly polite and very attentive. We was suprised firstly to a set menu either two courses or three with a choice of roughly 5 items per course to choose from, our starters mushroom soup and chicken wings with a bit of stir fried cabbage just ok Main salmon crushed potatoes with asparagus and that's what you got! No other veg so I shared my veg with my husband, I had lamb shank (pre made) prob microwaved mashed potatoes and mixed veg.. nothing wrong with it . Dessert I ordered profiterolls and wanted ice cream with them I was told they come with cream in them!! By the chef who was sat down doing paper work.. I said I would pay extra.. so that's what I got. My husband ordered the cheese board selection the chef shouted over to say they haven't got much cheese cheddar and stilton, my husband just asked for the cheddar.. he didn't get any extra cheese and only 4/5 biscuits not enough for the cheese or chutney ! However we felt uncomfortable at this point as the kitchen staff had started to clean up. I could not believe they had the back door open..on a night like Friday 7thfeb the wind was blowing in and it was freezing, Ok they would have got the floor dry in no time and of home early but as customers still eating listening to crash bang of clearing up the kitchen then the back door open. We would only maybe call in and try Sunday lunch it's not a special occasion evening restaurant for us that's why there stars. ( Best wishes to the waiter in your future hospitality career, you did a great...

The Red Door Bistro – Wigan’s Best-Kept Secret

Tucked away behind an unassuming red door in Wigan, this little gem is easily one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in a long time. From the moment we stepped inside, we were greeted by a warm and intimate atmosphere. The dim lighting created the perfect cosy setting, making it feel like a special hidden retreat away from the hustle and bustle.

The service was nothing short of exceptional even tho there was 8 of us for a anniversary. The staff were incredibly attentive, ensuring that every detail of our meal was just right without ever feeling intrusive. Their knowledge of the menu and recommendations were spot on, adding a personal touch that made the evening even more enjoyable.

Now, let’s talk about the food—absolutely incredible. Each dish was beautifully presented and packed with flavour, clearly crafted with passion and skill. Every bite was a delight, from the starters to the desserts, with fresh, high-quality ingredients shining through.

What truly set the experience apart was the personal touch from the head chef, who came out to speak with us. Hearing about the inspiration behind the menu and the love that goes into every dish made the meal even more memorable. It’s rare to find that level of dedication and connection in a restaurant, and it’s something that will keep me coming back.

If you’re looking for an intimate, high-quality dining experience in Wigan, The Red Door Bistro is a must-visit. It may be hidden, but once you find it, you’ll...

Went in after we found the place, a little hidden away but worth the effort. It was after one o clock and nobody was in except staff, this is usually a bit worrying, but proved not to be the case here.

We were seated quickly and a drinks order taken, given a menu and a specials board also fetched over. We didn't know what to choose as even though it wasn't a massive menu, it all sounded good. Not decrying the shorter menu at all, this is a sign they want to do a small amount of things well and this really is the case.

We had a Christmas dinner and a beef bourguignon, both excellent, the veg was just right and so tasty, everything was delicious.

The wine I had with this was a house tempranillo, went well with the beef, it was a very pleasant wine, wish I knew where to get some as there are so few reds I enjoy

Dessert was also fantastic salted caramel profiteroles, could have eaten them again, and again, a Christmas pudding that was excellent too.

A brilliant find, great staff, excellent food and a good wine list, will be back and also...
