First of all, we only scored 4 for food as we only had one breakfast during our stay.
We arrived very late on the Saturday evening due to plans not quite working out plus we had theatre tickets so we messaged the pub to let them know and ask if ok, and were assured this would be ok.
On arrival we were expected and greeted warmly. One of the staff showed us to our room & made sure to show us the fire exits. She then explained breakfast would be to order only for the morning & we both chose a nice sounding full English. We were travelling with 2 dogs and despite our youngest being a bit "aggressive-sounding", they were also given a warm welcome.
The room itself (en suite double, room 3) was a very good size with plenty of space for us all. The only thing was the lack of a wardrobe which didn't really bother us. A sturdy coat hanging hook on the door had several good hangers which can be used if needed.
On Sunday, we had arranged to meet up with friends (they had 'baby sat' our dogs the previous evening) so didn't have time to eat at the pub, but the carvery looked fabulous. After returning in the evening, I went up to our room with our dogs but my hubby went back down to the bar for a drink.
The next morning, he explained that he had stayed down for a few more than anticipated as he had been chatting to the owner, staff and other customers.
We felt quite sad leaving as Mike (owner) and his staff looked after us so very well. In particular a big thank you to Lucia and Mia for their care and the general happy atmosphere during our stay. A note for the Lucia & Mia is that our dogs names are Kristoff and Kyra (just in case message got confused).
We will see you all again. Thanks.
Apart from that, we had the most restful 2 nights sleep we have had while away for a very long time. The bed was just tso...
Read moreWe walked the river in Alresford and stopped in the Globe for a drink that morphed into lunch. They do an excellent menu 2 courses for £13 which I alone went for . I had the whitebait which was the most delicious I ever have had coated in a gorgeous crispy coat of breadcrumbs served with a tasty side of salad in a delicious dressing. My wife had the lamb of the al a carte and came out nice and pink and was the neck fillet so lacking the fat and was much enjoyed served with the slowest roasted sautéed potatoes and were absolutely delicious. She does not like the carrots and parsnips served so went for a side dish of cabbage sautéed in bacon and nothing was left on her plate. I had the fish in batter a little disappointing in being not coated enough and not crispy as batter should be and small in size . The table opposite were eating battered cod the portions large in size and the batter deep brown and crispy so I was expecting the same. Maybe they ordered the large portion but for the £13 two course meal for me was still a bargain. However the mushy pea's with mint were delicious as was the buttered spinach I ordered. There was no room unfortunately to try to the desserts a treat we will look forward to. The service was excellent the ambience delightful as such an historic pub should be and we will be definitely going back for a repeat of a very...
Read moreThe view is nice but a little trimming could improve it quite a bit and larger sunshades would not go a miss. The staff worked hard on a very very hot day and were very nice.
Unfortunately I would still only say my experience was OK. Sadly one of the staff made a mistake and forgot to ask the kitchen for our food so we ended up waiting an hour and half or more for our food. But it was just a mistake, they apologised and offered a round of soft drinks as compensation and it wasn't their fault that we were exhausted and over heating from our walk just prior to our visit.
The menu was limited but OK, it was cooked OK but lacked imagination, and for me it was over seasoned.
I will be honest too, for me it was expensive, but looking around the usual clientelle could probably easily afford it so I don't begrudge it, but I wouldn't go again, there are waterside pubs closer to home that would tick the box, and this didn't live up to my...
