This week we tried another local restaurant Lucy’s Big Burger. Lucy’s is a small restaurant in south central Abilene. We had high hopes for this place with all the good reviews prior to our arrival but alas they fell short tonight. We started out with the best part of the meal the Jalapeño Popper appetizer. Outstanding bite sized pieces,an amuse bouche if you will, of cheesy bacon with a hint of pepper goodness. Yummy! My sister tried a #3 Lucy with Cheese. The hamburger patty had no flavor or seasoning. A little salt and pepper would have helped so much. It was cooked medium which I am not fond of and neither was my sister. The bun was was soft and sweet and would have been a great vessel for a better cooked and seasoned patty. The Onion Rings were okay cooked well but not great. My other sister ordered The Texas Burner burger. It came with Pepper Jack,Bacon, and all the veggies. She added extra onions. It comes with a sweet Habanero Sauce you add or dip as wanted. Again no seasoning on the patty but this was pretty good with added Habanero sauce. The tater tots were hot and crunchy. She enjoyed her meal. I ordered the Jumbo Chili Cheese Dog. The wiener was out of proportion with the bun. Not enough chili cheese or onion for the giant wiener. I wasn’t pleased with the taste of the wiener. It was served in a paper boat on a way too small plate. I had ordered French Fries for my side and they were mealy and cold! Yuck. The way the fries were positioned on the small plate every time you went to cut your chili dog the cold fries slid off the plate onto the table. I noticed another customer brought her plate of cold fries up front to complain. So my issue my wasn’t isolated. It took a while to get out ticket to check out. All the servers were nice and made sure our drinks were filled but seemed out of sorts tonight. We would not recommend this place. They are much better burger...
Read moreWe had always heard others talk about Lucy's and even had friend that worked there for just a few months. We would always be way far north of town and hungry now. Not willing to take a chance on something new... Man was that a mistake...here it is the next day after we had eaten there and I'm still satisfied on what I ate yesterday from there. Awesome atmosphere service waitress staff was remarkable. I have not had an more enjoyable experience going out to eat in a long time... if ever, well maybe when I was lit', when I got to go out to eat with my Nanny and Paw Paw...it was like walking into the Derrick Cafe on South Treadway or the Pancake house knowing I could play the juke box and order what ever I wanted and didn't worry about anything, but enjoying being there. Back then you didn't worry about what you just ordered cuz you just knew you was at home and part of the family and while you were there, you would be fed well and enjoyed the company while you there too. That's how I felt when we walked out the door that night...part of the family. Everyone was friendly and I say everyone cuz that's what it was. The owner spoke to us; 3 or 4 of the girls working spoke to us too and not just cuz that's part if the job either...or maybe it is, either way I know I never felt like customer or a meal ticket...I felt more like family that was welcomed back anytime... And then thiers the food..."WOW"...is all I can say about an awesome experience and food. Thanks to everyone there...
Read moreLucy’s Big Burgers is big on flavor! From the juicy burgers to the homemade ice cream, Lucy’s Big Burgers is a must when in Abilene. The food is worth a visit alone, however the service deserves extra recognition. An elderly couple using mobility assistance devices entered the restaurant. When the owner Amy saw them and recognized that the next table to be seated was at a high table on another side of the restaurant, the owner directed the couple to a large table close to the entrance. I approached the owner after this as knowing others with mobility challenges would have wanted the same treatment for them. The owner then explained how she makes all the ice cream there and that chocolate is her favorite. The burgers we ordered were grilled to perfection - well seasoned without being overbearing. Their homemade ketchup packed a punch and went well with their fresh cut fries. We were less enthusiastic about their chicken bites but everything else beat our expectations. Highly recommend for the food and for the service. Note the opening hours: Monday to Thursday 11 am - 2 pm, Friday & Saturday 11 am - 9 pm,...
