China Garden Restaurant — Restaurant in Adrian

Let me first start off by saying that the food was great! I did have to wait outside because they are only allowing 1 person at a time in the store due to covid-19 which is fine.

I walked into the lobby area to get my order and the hostess stated it would be $21.60. I handed over my card and she brought me my food. As I am getting ready to walk out the door she asks if I can sign the receipt for the transaction. I signed the receipt and left.

Today, I looked at my bank statement and the charge for China Garden says $24.60. Which means a $3 dollar tip was left on my receipt after I left. (I left the tip and total blank because it was take out. I don't typically tip on take out but always tip 20% or more when dining in.) I really could care less about the $3 but how many people have they been doing this to? I have never had this happen to me before getting takeout and I never fill out the tip or total for takeout. From now on I will make sure I fill that section out to avoid them adding their own tip.

Before 2020, this was a high four star Chinese restaurant and had incredible atmosphere, great people and even better food. It was one of the best restaurants of lenawee county for what it was.

Fast forward to November 2024 and the ownership has since changed hands. The food is now terrible (it's edible and that's being kind) and they have next to no atmosphere. I ordered general tso with fried rice and the rice tasted like some sort of disgusting chemical. The chicken was tough and chewy. I threw all the rice in the trash. We also ordered crab Rangoon and it didn't even come with the plum sauce they SAID it would come with. Add to short changing us for our food and you have all the makings of a 1 star restaurant.

I've been ordering food from here since 2012. I've been inspired to drive to Toledo for Chinese food, because I'd rather have quality that I have to drive and get, rather than horrible food that I would rather dump into the trash,...

I really tried to enjoy the food, but it was just bland and tasteless on the beef dishes. I could not tell my Rainbow Beef from my girlfriend's Mongolian Beef at all. Soy sauce, salt, and pepper were of no help. There really just was nothing to the dark sauces they cooked the beef in.

Sweet and Sour Chicken had flavor, though, and the sides were alright.
