Let me start with the fact that normally I would give this place a 5 star across the board. We live super close to this restaurant and have been coming here regularly for lunch and dinner since they opened their doors. The food has been incredible! The best vegan sushi I’ve ever had, that we’ve ever had. But tonight we are really disappointed. We ordered all our favorites and nothing seemed right. We love their mushroom miso soup and always comment on how delicious it is especially because it’s not over salty. Tonight salty as heck. The cucumber salad was not at all fresh and super over soaked in the sauce and soggy. Normally delish. We absolutely love their portobello tempura and get so excited every time we come here to get it. It was over cooked, dry and just inedible. They have a chef special called poke dip that we’ve loved since it was put on specials. We normally order one and share but because it’s so good and never enough we ordered 2 tonight and again disappointed. Not fresh, especially the avocado and over sauced. Same story with the dynamite sushi. Over sauced and every piece fell apart. We brought up our concerns to the wait staff but they didn’t seem interested or concerned. They just kept saying there would take things off the bill. I tried to explain to them that we love love love this place and have came back so many times and that it wasn’t really about the money or taking it off the bill as much as we wanted this new vegan restaurant to stay amazing and in business as we’ve watched other local vegan restaurants rise and fall. I also explain to them that we had initially planned on bringing another couple with us who is trying to go vegan right now and how we are so grateful they couldn’t make it because it would not of been the experience we’ve been bragging about to them. The2 staff members who were waiting on us tonight wouldn’t even make eye contact worry us when bringing up our concerns. Typically the staff is very sweet even though they are kind of slow. Seems to me they’re understaffed but usually always very nice. Tonight they just seemed disengaged and uncaring. Not one “I’m sorry about the food or experience” at all. So just in case the owners or managers review these reviews I wanted to say we 99% of the time absolutely love this restaurant! Staff and food are really really great! I am writing this review on the drive home from the restaurant which is a Friday night January 21, 2022. Dinner time. The two waiters working, you guys should know who they are and maybe you could talk to them and the chefs about handling the customer service a little bit better and the food. Every table was taken so I know that they were busy but we’ve been there on busy days before and everything was fabulous. And maybe it was a new chef but if so they shouldn’t have been scheduled until they fully have the recipes down and especially not on a busy Friday night. Hope you guys can continue being the wonderful place that we love to go enjoy our vegan sushi and that this experience was just a one time fail. We do suggest everybody tries it like we said 99% of the time is amazing. 🌱🙏🏻🍣
Just wanted to add an update. So after the review I wrote the owner reached out to me and was nothing but kind and considerate! The food is amazing the staff is talented and kind and we love eating at Ma-Kin sushi!! This place is a delicious MUST try 😋🍣👍🏼❤️
Update October 2023 -
Ma-kin Sushi, the chef’s, the staff and the owner are all AMAZING!! The above post was about one night and one night only!! We’ve been Coming back religiously and every time is just really great!! The food is so mind blowing amazing for vegans and non vegans alike. The menu is so wonderful and the specials menu never disappoints! Love you all at...
Read moreBest plant-based sushi in the area (we traveled from Simi Valley to get it)! I apologize for my dark and somewhat blurry photos. We ordered for pick up and ate in the car on the way home so the lighting wasn't the best.
Here's what my husband and I ordered: Veg tempura cut roll Spicy tuna hand roll (not pictured) Valencia California Tempura roll Rock shrimp tempura roll
We liked all of them! But our favorite hands down was the Valencia roll. It wasn't too spicy and the sauces on top were perfect. Although there were only 6 rolls in the to-go box, they were big! It took me two bites to eat them. And although they were $19, I'd get them again!
My next favorite was the California Tempura. It's such a classic sushi roll I used to get before we went vegan and this had all the flavors I remember! And this roll is totally affordable. I'll order this one again too!
If you want something fun, go for the rock shrimp. It was an experience eating it and our favorite bites were when we piled a few pieces of rock shrimp on each roll. I'd get this again if we were eating in the restaurant. But trying to lift this to your mouth while riding in a car is challenging lol. My kids would love the rock shrimp though.
I didn't eat the spicy tuna hand roll or the veg tempura cut roll, but my husband did and loved them both. And the prices were good for those too.
We have 3 kids but didn't order for them because we wanted to try it out for ourselves first. If you're ordering for kids, go for the California tempura. It's a pretty classic roll and the size is small enough for kids to eat. :)
I'd love to return and dine in the restaurant. There's lots more on the menu that I'd like to try. When I do, I'll update my pics and review!
Cheers to Ma-Kin though for offering some delicious vegan sushi for those of us in...
Read moreFirst of all, to the person who only gave Ma-Kin two stars even though they are “good 99% of time” you really need to check your math. That comes across as cruel to lower their average when you said yourself they are 99% good. The only bad thing about this place is how it has ruined other vegan restaurants for my spouse and I. We don’t eat out a lot, and when we do we used to like to change it up, variety is the spice of life. Then we discovered Ma-Kin Sushi and now we are on that Malange spice and can’t move on. Neither of us has been able to convince the other to try some place else on our date nights. Everything here is good. Literally. We have been working our way across the menu and it’s all dope. I leave every time ready to be taken to the next life I’m so full and satisfied. The spicy miso soup is the best miso soup in LA. The pork buns are the best buns I’ve ever had. The rolls are so good that if your carnivore friend says they can tell a difference they prefer the “real thing” then you can tell them you prefer “real friends” and not liars because the food at Ma-Kim is the best. Last time we had the Spicy Miso Mushroom Soup, Pork Buns (so good I almost forgot to take a picture), steamed gyoza (not pictured), volcano roll, California roll, and spicy tempura shrimp roll. Go here and never need to decide where to eat out again. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️...
