I would love to give a zero star review but it's not allowed. I ordered through their online service and that went smoothly. They came at a decent time, but not at all concerned with that. The delivery girl was pleasant too. It's when I noticed we were missing food. Turned out to only be a side a rice, no biggie, right? I called to let them know I was missing it and the woman on the phone told me since there were two rice orders it was probably put in the larger container. I let her know that what I got was a real small container of rice and nothing bigger. She asked me to hang on a second and a guy came on the phone. He proceeded to tell me that he put it in a different container. I repeated to him all I had was a real small container of rice. It looked like one small portion. He tells me me again it's in a different container and then said to just come down and get another rice. I was too tired from working an extremely long day, thats why I ordered delivery. I asked for a refund for the rice and he told me the rice is free. Thats fine and dandy, but he couldn't even give me an apology. Thats what really grated me. He wanted to argue instead of just saying sorry. I get it, mistakes happen all the time, but not even "oh, I'm so sorry about that." I got real irritated. I tried to delete my info from the site used to order food from them but there was no way. I couldn't find the number so I called them again. I asked how I delete my info from that site. The first woman said she wasn't sure and to hang on. The second woman came on the line asking about a refund I never asked about on this call. I told her I just wanted to know how to delete my info. She told me to hang on and the rude guy got on the phone. He wouldn't let me finish anything I was saying. He yelled at me to just call that company and they had nothing to so with it. I tried to tell him that was what I wanted but couldn't find the number. They use that company so they should have the number, right. He just kept yelling so I hung up on him. I would never recommend The New Shanghai to anyone. Never in my life has anyone ever treated me like that. All of this could've been avoided with an apology.... one small side of...
Read moreI wanted to give New Shanghai a chance since I live nearby. Went for lunch (how can you beat chinese lunch prices?) and ordered egg drop soup and chicken w/vegetables. The order was ready in 5 min as expected.
When I got home and opened the soup, it was so yellow that I assumed it was radioactive. Truly, this colour is not found in nature. It had a good amount of egg, but a hefty amount of corn flour to thicken it as well. Although the taste was ok, I'd not order it again.
The chicken w/vegetables was a little better. They provided a good portion size. The vegetables were a little overcooked so they lost most of their crunch. The amount of sauce was perfect as the meat and veg weren't floating in a river. Again, a bit too much corn flour. The pork fried rice which came with it was moist and a bit oily. I should have asked for egg fried rice instead.
All in all, I wasn't disappointed; however, I won't be making a trip back even though they're so close. For those who care, they don't accept AMEX.
Update: I've been here only a handful of times since the original review, and nothing has improved. On my last visit, the person at the counter tried to start an argument with me when I asked if they had a menu online. Seriously? Their food is terribly greasy, it's the standard Chinese takeaway prices, and the staff are less than pleasant so I...
Read moreLet me begin by saying this is the first review I ever leave on Google . I'm not the type of guy to go through the effort of slandering local business, but this needs to be done.
This place is the closest Chinese in my area. For convenience, I don't normally like making a longer drive to go pick up Chinese food. This is no longer the case.
Let's start on customer service! The staff is quick tempered, bad listeners and follow the "it is what it is" mentality. If your order is wrong, good luck!
Menu online is completely inaccurate, Lunch specials do not come with soup or salad and pricing is significantly more expensive.
When told about their online menu, they deny that the menu is theirs, although it's quite evident we're looking at the same establishment.
The food is disgusting. the chicken fried rice was extremely undercooked and the general tsos tasted like paste. My girlfriends honey chicken came with 2 sides of sweet and sour and 0 honey on the chicken. She requested a side of honey sauce. When we called back, the same lady ended up arguing with us about giving us the right sauce and how they've been "open for a year"
At the end of the day, the decision is yours whether you want to go here.
As for me, any Chinese place where you have to ASK for fortune cookies is...
