WOW seriously.... I went to pick up some chicken at Zankou because I saw all the yelp ratings and wanted to give it a try. But nothing could have prepared me for what I found and sadly ATE when I promptly got home. I didn't see the mold on the bread at first because as you can see in the first picture, it was pretty light. But boy, was that bread tough, dry, and funky tasting and at second look, I noticed green splotches all over it. I cannot explain the disgust I felt as I spit everything out and gargled my mouth about 50 times. I couldn't even eat the chicken because I was so grossed out and wondered what kind of sanitary measures were held when cooking the chicken if the bread was this nasty. During COVID, when all these businesses are struggling, I thought it'd be a good idea to order and support their business, but I am in total regret. They should be even more careful with the sanitation practices when handling their food because of the virus these days.. I called the assistant manager (because the manager apparently wasn't there) and she said that she'd give me another chicken meal for free, but I did not want to ever come back because I can't trust their cleanliness. She swore that their bread came in that day, but that is a blatant lie because how can bread get that moldy in less than 12 hours? I mean if you are going to lie to a customer, at least give them a better excuse that actually is plausible. Anyways, she then told me she would have the manager call me the next day and nobody ended up calling. I won't be coming back to a place that 1. is terribly dirty and 2. does not even follow up with their customers when they have a legitimate issue with the safety of their food... Will not be coming back...
Read moreI am writing this while sick, unable to taste with a grating scratch inside of my throat. This is not a good idea. I try to write about food, but I have forgotten what flavor is.
That isn't to say that the rating I am giving Zankou is based on that. No, this one was thought out before I even got sick. The reviews made this place seem promising, but it could not live up to that promise.
We came in, surrounded by insane people, and ordered our food. I got the tri-tip wrap and my lovely almost wife got the chicken wrap. Both were close to $7.00. That is overpriced. I don't pretend to know about food costs for this business intimately, but mine was some steak in a piece of pita bread with chunks of tomato and garlic sauce. It was probably the least effort that could have gone into the wrap as could be humanly conceived. I don't even know if that sentence worked out gramatically, but I sure as hell am not going to go through the trouble to figure it out.
The flavor was decent, at least on the steak. The garlic sauce was overly salty, and I say that having eaten plenty of this style of food that others complained were like a heaping bowl of salt.
Save your money and go to Genie Den instead. Or better yet, get some pita bread from Trader Joe's, whip up some garlic sauce from an online recipe and grill your own tri-tip.
I'm done here, can I have my check now?...oh right, I do this for...

Today during the whole Covid-19 pandemic I ordered food for my family, picked it up and drove back home only to find that they didn't give me my rice (something my kids weren't about to forgive me for). I called them up and told them I didn't get the rice I ordered, and without skipping a beat the gentleman on the other end of the line was apologetic asked how far I had to drive (I didn't tell him but it was Lamirada so it was a bit of a trip) I told him it doesn't matter I don't have a choice cause the kids expect rice and I need these demons to eat. Without even asking he offered me two whole pita wraps and another apology, I gladly accepted and started back to get my order.
Once I got there they were crazy busy still, and just as apologetic and helpful. I got my rice and wraps and headed back out.
I can't thank essential workers in the food industry enough for remaining open in order to feed hungry families. If this franchise is taking just as good of care of their employees as they are their customers that would be amazing.
Again I can't recommend their food enough and today in the worst possible environment their customers service was...
