Spice and Gravy Southern Eatery — Restaurant in Arlington

Although I was the only white guy there, I loved this place. The food had an excellent flavor and I especially loved the atmosphere. They had what looked like an old stereo console playing smooth jazz, but it was actually a cabinet with a bluetooth speaker inside. It fit right into the decor perfectly, like a small upper class restaurant. I got the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes, gravy and green beans and as I said the flavor was excellent. The only negative thing I can say about anything was the meat was a little on the tough side. However, I’ve eaten at lots of places serving chicken fried steak and there’s only one I’ve been to that the meat wasn’t a little tough, it’s just the nature of that cut of meat. I will certainly go back to check out other items on the menu. On a more curious note, they had sweet tea with a hint of chocolate flavor, apparently it’s the customer favorite. It was good, but I guess it’s an acquired taste. I’m just used to having chocolate in a desert. They made other flavored tea, that was just the one for that day. The server said they are only open on weekends right now, so I suggest going on an off time to avoid the crowds, but it’s worth it whatever the case. First time here, we walked in about 12:05pm on a Saturday. It was a relaxing chill vibe, with quiet but present music that fit the setting. We ordered at the counter, got the appetizer which I think is crispy mac ‘n roast/brisket rolls, which were like eggrolls but with filled mac n cheese and brisket. 10/10. Delicious 😭 we ordered the fish-greens-n mac plate, and the roast and grits plate. My catfish was amazing, flavorful, cooked perfectly, and lightly crisped. The greens were well flavored, 9.5/10, and the mac n cheese was great too, 9/10. And when we finished, I didnt feel extremely bloated and heavy, which was a pleasant surprise. I just felt like I ate good. We also drank pumpkin spice sweet tea, it was a little too sweet for me so I diluted it with water, but regardless it was sooo good too. 8/10. There was a single man at working the front and he was extremely polite, it was only about 4 other people that came in, but he attended us and checked on us all.

Definitely coming back to support this restaurant. Praying that prosperity flows here because...

Wanted to take a break from BBQ, and I’d been wanting some catfish, theirs looked pretty good online, decided we’d give it a try. Very nice small establishment, loved the minimalist decor. We received a warm welcome and good service. Now for the food. I ordered a piece of catfish which was pretty darn good, the flavor was on point and it was fried to perfection. I also had the chicken fried steak plate, which was my mistake because I actually wanted smothered chicken, but prepared like the chicken fried steak. The steak had way too much breading, however, the breading was seasoned pretty good. The steak itself was a little chewy, every bite had some that I wasn’t able to chew all the way. Probably wouldn’t order that again. The green beans were fresh but lacked flavor, there was no seasoning on them at all. The brown gravy was good as well. We also ordered the oxtail dinner.
