The Baker and the Cakemaker in Auburn is a charming spot for a delicious treat, but be prepared for a potential wait, especially on weekends. I'd give it a 4-star rating. Indoor/Outdoor Seating: They offer both indoor and outdoor seating, which is great depending on the weather and your preference. Parking Challenges: Finding parking can be a bit tricky, though. There's limited parking around the bakery itself. Busy But Worth It: I visited on a weekend afternoon, and the place was buzzing! I had to wait in line for 5-10 minutes to order. A Menu with Something for Everyone: Their menu has a good variety, with beverages, toasts, sandwiches, salads, pastries, and even drinks. They also have beautiful cakes on display, but keep in mind they only sell slices from the daily selection, not necessarily everything you see. A Touch Slow on Service: While the staff was friendly, the service was a bit on the slow side. It took another 10 minutes for them to heat up my banana hazelnut chocolate bread. Worth the Wait: However, the wait was absolutely worth it! The bread itself was fantastic. It had the perfect balance of banana, hazelnut, and chocolate flavors, and heating it up created a delightful textural contrast with slightly crispy edges. I honestly wish I had ordered more. Overall: The Baker and the Cakemaker is definitely worth checking out if you're in Auburn. The food is delicious, the atmosphere is inviting, and they have a variety of options. Just be prepared for a potential wait, especially during peak times.

So many memories associated with this building and all the bakeries that have graced us with their divine baked goods. I loved going there as a child and high schooler to get mint chocolate brownies for 35 cents at Hilda’s. Then New Dawn Bakery was my favorite place to go when I was diagnosed celiacs and the most delicious lemon squares could be found there. Today I made a trip to The Baker & the Cakemaker while in town visiting Auburn and was pleasantly surprised to find gluten free brownies, blueberry muffins, cheese puffs and even 8” chocolate raspberry vegan gluten free cake! Amazing texture, moist and delicious! There is a chance of cross contamination though since it is a shared display case. Only the GF/vegan cake was gluten free and dairy free. Alice comes from a successful restrauranteur family and we went to high school together so it was cool to see her in her element there! I’m excited to order the vegan gluten free cake - just need 2 days notice!

There have been several bakeries in this location that have tried to fulfill Hilda's Bakery footsteps. None of them were able to continue the high standards we were used to, until now. The Baker and the Cake Maker delivers deliciously addicting baked goods and lunch items. The roast turkey sandwich was buttery and flavorful on a croissant. The breakfast salad was fresh and delicious with a vinaigrette dressing. I was surprised the $12 sandwich didn't include a side. I left feeling full, but not weighted down. It would be wonderful if the bakery offered half sandwich with a soup or salad combination. I would recommend an overhang where the tree is located. Items from the tree kept falling onto us and getting into our drinks. This could be a great lunch date spot. Since downtown Auburn has lots of boutique to explore, if you'd like to prolong the date. I ordered a breakfast sandwich, pastries and coffee to go. Paid, and they gave me the pastries and coffee, so I sat down to wait for my sandwich. And waited. And waited. Finally I came up to ask, they said it’d be right out. So I waited even longer. Then (who I can assume was the) manager came up to me with my receipt and asked “was this you?” And then showed me that they didn’t charge me for the sandwich. I told them that I ordered that at the glass case. She tried to make it seem like it was my fault, that the blame was on me. Then she said they’d have it out for me. So I waited even longer. Finally they told me that the sandwich was ready, and that I could pay for it. I said “you want me to pay for this now?” Again she made it seem like it was all on me. I waited for like almost 40 minutes. What in the world? They got my order wrong and I had to wait that long and they tried to gaslight me? That’s bad service. I had an 8 hour drive ahead of me and that really made my morning start off...
