Oh Kerby lane what a true let down. You have missed the mark on so many levels it makes me wonder why. They keep trying to get fancy but never really pull it off. New menu items with wonderful descriptions that just don't materialize on the plate they serve you. Forgotten ingredients, over cooked product and small portions. My wife likes a salmon dish they have and usually gets it when we go but it has dropped in luster the last couple of times we have gone. She loves the Brussels sprouts with tamarind glaze but this time no glaze at all plus they had a bad taste to them like they were fried in old fry oil, missed quality all around. Later that night she said her stomach was not feeling so hot, so wonder about the salmons freshness. My son got the kids French toast plate and it was so small we had to order another one because he was still hungry after the first plate. When the waiter brought out the second plate he just it on the table instead of clearing the other plate. I had to ask him to clear the old plate. The silverware was dirty and we asked for another set and it never came. Luckily I ordered a sandwich so he could us mine. My chicken sandwich was over fried and dry the bun was lacking and made the meal even drier. My beers were cold but when I ordered a new specialty cocktail I was told they didn't have the spicy pineapple sour mix made yet. I told them that was fine and would wait. The waiter came back and said the person making the drinks wasn't going to stop to make it he was to busy making other drinks. I asked to talk to the manger to see why they couldn't make spicy margarita mix in 45 minutes. And he was no help at all, instead of offering a reason he said they weren't going to do it. I mean what are we talking about making simple syrup with jalapeno boiled in it how hard would have that been. I know because I had the drink there before and the server brought me out a half drink, but said this one is free we are making more mix now and will bring you out a fresh one as soon as its ready. Young short haired blonde lady brought out to me with a smile and it was a great drink. For us Kerby Lane is off our list for family dinner night, to many other options in town. Customer service can make you or break you. Thanks but no thanks The picture posted is from a...
Read moreI arrived at 5:37pm on a Monday evening (New Years) with my son and sister to get some dinner. We were visiting from out of state. We actually came the day prior around 7:25pm but they closed at 8pm and we were told they stopped sitting people.
After about a minute of waiting, the host asked how many were in our party, which was 3. We were told it’ll be 5-10 minutes and that there was a party of 3 ahead of us. I was confused by the wait because there were several available tables. While waiting, I noticed they had a “Greetings from Austin” painting in the waiting room. It’s like the mural that on the side of a building elsewhere in Austin. There was a price tag for $800. I’m not sure if it’s actually for sale though.
Layout was nice. They have outdoor seating, which wasn’t presented as an option. They have bar seating for those that want that. They have beer on tap and a partial bar. I saw an abundance of Tito’s bottles.
We were sat at 5:46pm. They do have kids menu and crayons, which was nice. The adult menu, however, was dirty… Our waitress came at 5:50pm. Her name was Zoey. She was friendly. We got waters to start. They have happy hour from 4-6pm every day. I ordered a Blueberry Collins at 5:53pm, which came 5 minutes later. It tasted decent and more like soda than an alcoholic beverage. I hadn’t eaten since breakfast so I can say that I did feel it a little bit. I’ll also note that the bar menu was dirty too.
My son got the kids breakfast platter. I got the bacon wrapped meatloaf with a side of home fries. My sister got French toast and chicken.
The food came at 6:19pm, which was about 20 minutes after ordering. My home fries were missing and came at 6:26pm. Every single part of my meal was delicious! The home fries were seasoned amazingly. The broccoli was cooked perfectly. The meatloaf was mouth watering! The sauce initially threw me off appearance wise, but it was amazing. My son and sister enjoyed their food. I tasted their French toast and I enjoyed it.
Zoey was attentive I would definitely return for the meatloaf. My only major complaint is that the menus were dirty and there was trash on the floor under the booth we...
Read moreWhat a sad day it is when I feel compelled to write a review of my favorite restaurant in Austin. It literally breaks my heart. Ever since they moved into this new shiny location it just hasn't felt the same and this morning, they didn't have peanut butter for my pancakes. Since they moved into this new shiny location that is pretty much the only thing that separates them from Magnolia Cafe. And now, just like Magnolia Cafe, they tell me they don't have peanut butter. Hopefully they just ran out like the assistant manager told me.
The service was exemplary as always. My waiter did his best to ease my pain and I did eat the pancakes, since that's why I stopped there on my way to work today in the first place. They are very good with or without peanut butter but then, so are Magnolia Cafe's. The assistant manager comped my breakfast too and that was a nice gesture. I gave them four stars because the service was very good and the pancakes were cooked perfectly. Yes, I dropped a star simply because no peanut butter.
The original location is still in the same old house on Kerby Lane I believe. It was the last time that I ate there and it still has that same old feeling when you walk in the front door and sit down to eat.
EDIT! EDIT! EDIT! I waited a couple of weeks to give them plenty of time to replenish their stock of peanut butter, if they really intended to do that. The assistant manager assured me that they definitely intended to, while he apologized for the oversight. I arrived at 6:00am as I normally do if eating breakfast out on my way to work and when the waitress asked me if I'd like something to drink, I responded with: "water and are you still out of peanut butter?" She didn't know off the top of her head but she went to look. She returned with the orgasmic news that they did indeed have a stock of peanut butter again. My little world is in balance again, and I need to edit my review to five stars instead of four.
"Short stack of buttermilk pancakes, two eggs over medium and a small bowl of peanut butter on the...
