Read moreI was asked explicitly by the waiter to review this establishment on google maps so here I am reviewing it. What a strange and bizarre experience. I was here at 9 pm on a monday - they close at 11:30 - and it was completely dead. I wonder why they stay open so late. Perhaps they have their own peak traffic times they're anticipating, who knows. I was the only customer for a good half hour in there and there was no music which was eerie. Though I didn't mind the silence after a long day. I'm not really familiar with Indian cuisine so I didn't know what to order and the menu is absolutely colossal which is worrying to me. It means the kitchen has to prep one million different things and it casts doubt as to whether any one of those million of things are actually executed with the care and intentionality to make them good. There are no descriptions on the menu that I could see which describe what's in each dish. I had to rely on asking the waiter for recommendation and I asked for something without meat that had potatoes in it (I remembered some indian dish somewhere with potatoes that I quite liked, I'm a pescatarian). I was given a curry without potatoes (??) and no rice to go with it. I asked for rice on the side as well after my food arrived. I suppose I should have also taken the curry and the rice and mixed it in the plate to make a more enjoyable experience as the waiter had politely suggested to me but my perspective is that the restaurant is in charge of the presentation. I'm not mixing anything. The only wrong way to consume the food is to not put it in my body to begin with. Everything else is fair game. If the restaurant needs the rice and curry mixed together well they know I'm dining in, they're cooking the things in the kitchen, why can't they do the mixing for me? I'm here to eat not to perform culinary acrobatics. Anyway I ended up paying my bill of 19 dollars and change with a twenty and the waiter never asked me if I wanted change back. I would have said no but again... jarring. The curry was okay. A little heavy on the oil and the spice they used wasn't super tasty in my opinion. Suggestion 1: please add ingredients to the dishes. I do not have any allergies but I can imagine it will help those that do have them navigate your menu with more confidence. Suggestion 2: Please reduce the size of your menu significantly and be prepared to have substitutions. There should be a handful of dishes that are done extremely well that would make your place shine. Suggestion 3: Most people like water with ice. Water is served in those strange 4 oz water bottles that look to be about two gulps at most. Especially since the plates and the cutlery are ceramic and metal respectively the water being in water bottles is a bit strange. Suggestion 4:The waiters could really stand to learn proper waiting etiquette
Seat the customer - ask for drink/appetizer orders - bring drink/appetizer orders, take food orders - refill waters while waiting on food - bring food - check in after 5 mins, how's the food, did the kitchen do anything wrong? Refill waters - take any empty plates, take dessert orders if they choose - bring dessert if they wanted some if not bring the bill - take care of the bill, bring the receipt back - thank them for their patronage, move on to the next table.
I did not have a dedicated waiter that served me, only one of the 4 waiters that waited around doing nothing by the looks of it. This process described above was not followed which again made for a jarring...
Read moreThe food is authentic South Indian especially the briyani. We used to come here a few times every month. Never had an issue when I came with my South Indian families.
However, today I went alone for some Tamil Sangam event. I arrived at noon time and seated myself at a small table near the stage. Everything went well till a waitress came to ask me to move out while I was still enjoying coffee. I was in shock as it never happened to me before. She did not even use the words such as ‘please’, ‘sorry’, ‘excuse me’…she simply said indifferently ‘we have people waiting. You can wait at the back’…the event was delayed for a few hours so I ordered a few drinks while having the buffet. I understand that profit is the priority for the business so I did not want to hog a table without ordering anything else. The tip starts from 20% for the buffet lunch and she’s being extremely rude to ask me - a female customer who came alone - to wait outside under 100 degrees. I told her I came here for the event and had been waiting for hours for it to start. I don’t understand what makes her think it’s ok to ask a paying customer to leave the table just like that. I don’t mind settling the bill first although my coffee is still hot… You are serving a buffet for an event, which was late than the scheduled time. What makes you think it’s reasonable to ask a paying customer to move out and wait in Central Texas Heat?
Later I noticed that she did NOT ask any other customers to leave. I was also fully aware I was the only non-Indian looking customer for lunch…it’s quite shocking things like this still happen here in 2024! I feel like I need to bring my Indian passport to enjoy a meal at this location next time (if I ever want to come again…). That particular waitress is extremely uncultured and rude. She’s laughing and talking while checking out other customers. I don’t look like an Indian so I think she just assumed I was not coming for the event. And I went alone so she probably assumed it’s just easy to pick on me. It’s quite ridiculous to be honest. I informed the owner of what has happened and requested an apology, which I don’t think will happen. Sadly, the business needs such an exclusively racist waitress more than a paying customer.
I appreciate the peace offering the owner tried to offer in the end but I don’t think I want to interact with that waitress any more. It just doesn’t worth it. Customers come to your place because of the food. Customers are driven away because of some worker who doesn’t know anything about hospitality.
There is no short of authentic South Indian restaurants in Austin. We are more than happy to bring our business to somewhere else where everyone is treated equally and...
