Tried to love this place but I just couldn’t. I found this place online while trying to find a good sushi place for my bf and I to go and experience . I saw the reviews and thought it would be something worth trying.
We were both excited to try this place because we absolutely love sushi and Asian foods in general. We thought the whole concept was cool to try with the robot bringing us drinks and the belt bringing us different sushi to try but we were very disappointed in our experience.
First off we went on a Saturday evening which I would have assumed would be kind of busy due to the area and the day/time that we went but the wait wasn’t really that bad.
As we sat down the hostess asked if we came before in which we told them no. So they brought over a server to explain how the food and ordering works. The waiter came and did just that. Even though he explained it very quickly and briefly I had already knew the whole process based off of reviews I read so we atleast already had an idea.
After he left we ordered our drinks from the tablet above our table which I believe the robot was supposed to bring. After 10 min we hadn’t chosen any food from the belt nor did our drinks arrive. We waited to order our food because we were wanting to ask about wasabi because we love our sushi with it. We had pushed the button for assistance from our waiter shortly after ordering our drinks but noone came.
After about 15 min we saw our waiter walk past and tell us “one min” after flagging him down. After the waiter dropped off whatever he did for another table he came back and dropped off our drinks. I guess the robot was too busy or something. We did not get our straws because he quickly dropped them off and left and we were just so anxious to receive our drinks we didn’t think to ask. My bf had to get up and get the straws from the front because we figured it would take a while for the waiter to get back to us again.
We also pressed the green button again to ask for wasabi because we also didn’t get the chance to ask when he dropped off our drinks so quickly. The waiter came shortly this time and quickly gave us a slither of wasabi in a plastic container. Now we were able to start grabbing sushi off of the belt.
Long story short the sushi was just okay. There were some that were alright and some that just seemed off from flavor from the usual sushi we eat. We didn’t expect top tier sushi but some just didn’t seem fresh at all.
Overall I wasn’t expecting much of the best in regards to the food but the experience like many other reviews is what we came for and we were sadly disappointed and dissatisfied from the service. Not to mention the cleanliness of the establishment. You can see previous customers food still in the disposable slot they have placed by our table. Smudge marks and food still on the tablet as well as the soy sauce bottle left on the table. My hands felt dirty and greasy touching everything at our table.
We didn’t expect the best food but we atleast expected decent service and a good experience which none of our expectations were met. We will not be returning nor recommending this place to anyone.
This place has a cool concept which brought us here but at the very least I would recommend to clean your tables, tablets and other things provided to your customers to make them feel like they are sitting at a clean and inviting table. Customer service could...
Read moreDining at Kura Sushi is a staple for me and my husband. We go here a lot. It’s not the best sushi in the world or anything but they have the conveyor belt sushi formula down to a science. It’s always a good time eating here. And the sushi is very good but in Austin of course there are more high-end places. Kura Sushi is a great place to go for solid sushi dishes at a reasonable price in a fun atmosphere. I love watching the sushi plates pass by and pick up whatever looks good to me in the moment.
If you’ve never been, grabbing a plate is super easy, don’t be intimidated. You just pinch the plate, gently push down and then up and POP! goes the cover! At no point do you need to touch the cover for it to open. Once you do it a couple of times you’ll understand. However, if you’re not seeing what you want on the conveyer belt- not to worry! You can always order your favorites on the touch screen at the table. Some of my favorites include: Albacore Toro “Bintoro”, Garlic Skipjack Tuna, Yuzu Jalapeño Tuna, Umami Oil Salmon, Garlic Ponzu Salmon, , Seared Salmon with Japanese Mayo, Seared Salmon with Miso Cream Cheese, and Yellowtail. My husband prefers their rolls. A couple of his favorites include: Golden Crunchy Roll, Snow Crab California Roll, and Philadelphia Roll. To get drinks to your table, you order that through the touch screen as well. I love ordering drinks because they’re dropped off by their cute server robot. It has a cute face that winks at you when it rolls by. I love it and get a kick out of seeing it every time. I usually get a water and Coke Zero when I’m here but every now and then I get an ice cold Sapporo Draft Beer. They always serve their beer in a chilled glass cup which I love. Sometimes I’ll skip dessert but, when I don’t, I love to get their Taiyaki Ice Cream. It’s delicious and the perfect size after all the sushi I’ve eaten.
One thing that’s unique about Kura Sushi is when you insert 15 sushi plates, you get a little video show on the screen AND a toy from the Bikkura Pon prize machine above your table. They change out the prizes regularly so there’s always a reason to come back. You also pay your bill via the screen at your table as well. The majority of your interactions with the staff are before and as you’re seated at your table. After that, everything can be done via the screen. I highly recommend downloading their app so you can reserve your table in advance because this place is very popular. They have booth seats and bar seating. Their booths can sit four people but the downside is that if you’re seated on the outside, you have to ask your friend close to the conveyor belt to grab your sushi the whole time. At the bar, you can grab all the sushi yourself but, it’s harder to talk as a group the more people you have in your party. So just keep that in mind. Overall, I love this place and will continue to come back for the good sushi and...
Read moreThis place is always fun to go to with friends, even if the sushi is what I would consider “mid”, I think the neat atmosphere and fun little gimmicks like the robot that brings your drinks and little prizes you get for how many plates you add up make up for the quality.
That being said, this last visit to Kura was spoiled a bit at the end of our meal due to a rude server. You don’t typically have a ton of interaction with your server, but they do come to the table quite a bit to try and clear trash and plates that don’t fit in the plate counting slot, and our server was very zealous about this, interrupting us often telling us to hand them our trash and plates. Even though it was a bit pushy I just figured that mngmt probably pushed them to do this.
The real issue was when we went to close out, we were paying half cash and half card, so we could not use the “pay at the table” option on the touch screen. We told our server we needed half the bill paid in cash and half on a card and handed them a $100 bill and the card. When the server returned they had mistakenly put all of the cash towards the bill and the remainder on the card. No big deal, we figured it was an easy fix. When we brought this to their attention they became visibly annoyed and argued with us about how we asked for the check to be split. I was trying to just let it go in spite of the attitude because I have been in the service industry for many manyyy years and understand that bad nights and mistakes happen, plus, as I mentioned before, I figured they could just fix it.
NOPE.
I was genuinely surprised that our request to have the bill adjusted to the way we had requested it be closed out was denied. I don’t know if they actually couldn’t do it or just refused to, but either way at this point I was visibly frustrated considering how they had responded to the situation, so I just said, very shortly and I’m sure with a bit of attitude at this point, to forget about it, we would figure it out between our party. The server walked away, then a few minutes later CAME BACK TO THE TABLE to condescendingly explain to me how I should ask for the check to be split in the future!!! I explained that I did not know how much clearer “Half of the bill on the card and the other half in cash” could possibly be, and they continued to argue with us for a bit then rolled their eyes once again before walking away.
Needless to say, I think the cute robot that brought our drinks had a better grasp on the service industry than our actual server, and the next time I get lured to this place to meet friends I will be sure to just close out with a card on the touch screen to avoid any confusion or...
