When eating Indian food, it’s such a wonderful distinct pallet of flavor. I love Indian food, so it was due time to take my taste buds for a ride by trying out Star of India.
Our choice of food was the dinner buffet so that we got to try a little of everything.
Briyani Rice- It didn't taste like it should. It almost tasted like plain rice with chicken. There is a food truck south Austin that has Briyani Rice and it’s 50x’s better!!!!
Butter Chicken- This was pretty good. It had flavor and was enjoyable. This was probably my favorite item.
Samosas- The samosas were way too big. They would have been more enjoyable if they were smaller in size. Because of how big they were, the moister from the filling didn’t allow for the Samosa to maintain crispness on the outside.
Goat Curry- The goat was enjoyable. It was very tender. The sauce however lacked flavor. It was like it almost had no flavor. Goat also isn’t for everyone due to its unique flavor. So if you ever try goat and don’t like it, just keep in mind, goat may not be for you.
Basmati Rice-This tasted like plain rice. It was missing its Basmati oomph. Maybe it just wasn’t cooked with bay leaves and cloves like usual. This may be why it tasted so plain.
Pineapple- They had fresh cut pineapple. Who doesn’t like fresh fruit right!? Well sadly it was disappointing. It was the most unripe pineapple! It lacked that wonderful sweet pineapple flavor. You could simply tell it wasn’t going to be good as it didn’t have that beautiful yellow color to it. It was a pale yellow color.
Chai- You may know this as Chai Tea. Whenever ordering Chai, I always ask if it’s made with water or milk. Star of India unfortunately makes it with water. This takes away from the authenticity and flavor of the Chai. Just think of it as Hot Cocoa with milk vs water. Big difference in flavor!
Fun fact, when you say Chai Tea, you are pretty much calling it Tea Tea. So next time you order Chai, leave off the Tea part.
Service was excellent! The wait staff were...
Read moreI've lived in this neighborhood for 20 years and been a regular at Star of India since I unpacked. It's not modern or hip or high epicurian, but their buffet serves some of the best "simply cooked," Indian food around.
Inside the place is kept quiet and cozy with several seating areas, one with room for larger parties. Even though the decor is a bit formal and traditional, the service is warm and welcoming. This is a place you can take a prom date, your visiting sister's family, or your hungry neighbor fresh from the yard work and eat comfortably as you are. With starched white tablecloths and the handsome host in perpetual suit and tie you'll feel like you are someplace special, however, you can still grab a table at 8pm on Friday without a reservation, get great service, and head through their great buffet in jeans and a T-shirt.
Full bar, order from the menu, or enjoy a taste of everything from the all-you-can-eat buffet.
There's better Indian food in town, but I'd rather eat at Star of India. Hey, Martha Stewart might be a better cook than your mom, but when you are craving meatloaf and mashed potatoes, who do you call? This place just...
Read moreAnyone looking for Indian food: please avoid! Esp., Don't get attracted by Indian buffet option as they are one among the few in the town serving Buffet and also only one serving thru out the day which should be alarming thing questioning their quality of food been served.
This is worst Indian food you can experience in Austin,TX. The food tastes bland and it is horrible. Although the owner's target is mainly toward American people who have no clue what they are serving as Indian food. It's not good and safe to eat here as none of the food is served freshly prepared ones. The food was horrendous & literally tasteless. The food wasn't authentic Indian at all. It looked like the preparation was done with curry powders and chicken/meat boiled together. None of the recipes was cooked or prepared properly. Even Madras Daal they say, didn't even taste like daal. Everything tasted like it was out from frozen, clearly. With few of the meat dishes we felt like vomiting with just a hunch of taste. None of the dishes were even lukewarm, forget food being hot! Star of india doesn't...
