I've been around the area since the Royal Jelly first opened years back so I am interested to see how this location evolves and changes over time in similar fashion. I'll be writing this review as I gain more and more experience with this place, but here are my initial thoughts.
Feel - Overall I love the feel of this place. It gives off the vibes of a bar that was purchased as a pet project of sorts; however, by someone who has had experience in the industry. It's aesthetic is comfortable with a vibe towards local. Seems like a place that is at home both packed on a Friday or Saturday night and on a Tuesday afternoon with a laptop. The outside has been expanded with a new deck and an expanded side portion for a little privacy.
Drinks - I favor a bar with a good beer selection which was disappointing for me as it seems that they a favor cocktails and mixology compared to pitchers and pints.
Food - TBD as I have not tried.
Specials - I did not know of any specials or happy hours until arriving and found out that I was too late. I am still unsure what the happy hour is in terms of special pricing but i am sure I will find out in the future.
Overall - I'm happy to see someone take over Royal Jelly as anyone who has been in the area a while will no doubt have fond memories of Wednesday Burger nights and good times. I was initially worried that the location would be leveled for something more austere or mundane and was elated to find out who the new owner would be. I will continue to edit this and makes changes as needed when I find out more; but as of right now, I am looking forward to trying the food items and coming back in the future to see how...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis place used to be cool. Used to be. But last night customer service was farthest from their mind.
Itās clear the bartenders are tired, overworked, or just downright cranky. I walked in wearing a guitar on my back and, as a joke said āIād like a Negroni and a songā. And immediately was met with āNO PLAYING MUSIC, we play our own musicā.
The bartender clearly didnāt get that I was just asking for inspiration and it was lighthearted conversation. I wasnāt going to do anything against their rules ā and it was clearly too loud to play in there. Whatās the deal?
At 12:00 they asked us to leave, so we were went to finish our drink outside, but the cashier proceeded to continue to crankily tell us to leave.
I donāt understand why sitting outside for another 10 minutes past closing is such a big deal. She even tried to recover from her faux pax by saying she appreciates our business, But the mood had turned sour at this point.
Will not be coming back if this kind of customer service constitutes. The whole point is that itās a place to relax, not to be bullied.
Hereās a simple way to fix this ā set your closing time to 11:30 PM and then give people a...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreHello neighborhood bar! Replacing Royal Jelly, but a great addition to a growing part of North Central. My husband and I were able to pop in, as in walk less than 5 minutes from home, after he got out of work. We made it with a half hour to close, and the staff was very welcoming even in the process of subtly closing for the night. Didn't catch the lovely tender's name, but Wes, also am employee of Hole in the Wall, introduced himself before we left. I look forward to trying some signature cocktails in the future, but the prices for a couple of Lonestar and a handful of shots ( we're service industry too. Know how to knock them back) left us with a happy wallet! There's so much to recommend, including the additions and updates to the small outdoor patio. It's friendly, inviting, and dog friendly with water bowls made available, and D rings set into the picnic tables for leashes. Can't wait...
