ThunderCloud Subs — Restaurant in Austin

LONG-time customer of TCS, and worst experience to date. I ordered two veggie delite subs (each exactly the same), and was told they "would be made IN THE BACK." First time in 40+ years of patronizing this restaurant that I did not have the opportunity to see my subs being prepared, so that it/they could be made in accordance with my wants, sanitary methods, etc., plus I had to tell the counter person what I wanted or didn't want by memory before they headed "to the back." When they finally returned, I then had to unwrap my subs to see what I had received, and make sure before I left that something wasn't amiss. Finding the "construction" satisfactory on a very quick lookover, I was then promptly overcharged by nearly four (4) dollars for the two sandwiches, which I immediately questioned. The reply was something along the line of "sorry, charged the wrong thing" or similar. Threw the subs in the 'fridge for tomorrow, and don't necessarily look forward to seeing what I brought home looks like. Not a very good experience all...

When you think about it, you could use essentially the exact same review for every single one of the 28 Thundercloud locations: "Their food is tasty and always hits the spot, and it's usually made just the way I want it, but every once in a while an employee is too high and messes up my order, but I'll still keep coming back because it's Thundercloud."

My order of choice: chicken salad, with pickles and jalapeños. I don't know why they charge extra for pickles and jalapeños when tomatoes and onions are free, but hey, I'm not a vegetable economist. Otherwise, just like everywhere else, my order is made correctly 95% of the time, except for the inevitable times when there's a 420% chance of a mixup. This location is notable for being drive-thru only for a big chunk of the evening, but I live within a literally 2 minute bike ride so...

Coming from Boston and being used to a grinder-style sandwich, I wasn’t impressed with this place on my first visit.

But over the years, it’s completely won me over. Their consistent hours and commitment to fair pricing — especially post-COVID — really stand out. It’s rare to find a place that offers both great value and reliable service these days.

The staff here is always friendly and professional, and unlike so many other spots around town that have gone downhill, this place has quietly become a gem for me.

NOTE: Please stop closing the dining room early.. That is my only complaint. stay open and take my order. it is very off putting to make someone walk through a drive through and honestly and...
