Update: **The bar offers nice ambience and is great place to go have a drink and conversation with strangers.** I'm giving it a 3 because the ambiance and service is great. The decor is done very well. My disappointment is the food is less than mediocre. On my recent visit, I ordered the carne asada. I asked for medium-rare and got well done. the steak was very thin and poorly seasoned. It lacked the mallard reaction you would expect from a nice steak. The cut of meat was poor and has some gristle. It was served with a small portion of rice (I like that), refried beans in a small taco shell, a side of guacamole and pico de gallo. I gave my wifemy soup, which she said was very good. We believe it was a carnita/vegetable soup. My wife ordered the tostada de caramone, an appetizer. It appeared to be cooked ceviche style, which we were hoping for. However, the shrimp was very chewy, like it was overcooked. She did not finish it. The salsa, served with the chips prior to the meal, was very onioney. We didn't finish the bowl or the chips. If you like spicy, you're not going to get it with the salsa. I have been twice. Many of the the staff take pride in the restaurant. I like that. I admire one hostesses standards and professionalism. One of the older male servers is an excellent server, with some old school professional serving skills. If he and the hostess set the standard, it would rank 4-star service. I'll try to learn the names next time to acknowledge them. The service is good. And, often that is good enough for me. However, the prices are high for this quality of Mexican food. I did like the atmosphere though. We'll go back, but it's not one of those places to go to to enjoy the cuisine. If you're looking for nice place to enjoy a drink and some appetizers, I highly recommend. They have a section for private events, which I think is an asset to the restaurant. The ambiance and the service would make this a nice place to have an event. Also, the bar feels separate than the restaurant, which makes it nice. The bar should be a little quieter in my opinion, but it's not distracting in the dining room. I want the back of the house to take the same pride as the front of the house staff. I want this to be an all around great restaurant.

Great appatizers and Margaritas! This classy restaurant with black cloth table cloths and classic oversized chairs splashes a bit of citch on the Standard and often abused Mexican ranch theme. I must say very well done my hats off to whomever decorated this wonderful space. The front of Sol Y Luna is a bit misleading. It does not look more than a hole in the wall restaurant. But inside it is spacious, and tastefully decorated. In addition hidden to the side is a large enclosed pattio dining area, and the lighted bar is impressive as well. The food as well is well prepared and displayed. Each time I have ordered here the food appears fresh and peeped with care. This is a wonderful place for a date or for groups.

We went to Smitten for Mother's Day but the kitchen was closed so we tried Sol y Luna nearby. If you're vegetarian or vegan they have veggie fajitas (for vegan just ask for no cheese if you get refried beans). I verified with the server that the rice and refried beans are vegetarian/vegan. It seems pretty pricey (especially for Bakersfield) but the portion was at least large for the fajita veggies and they tasted pretty good as well.

Poor customer service. 9 of us ladies went there to celebrate a bday.. Our waitress was unprofessional and made us feel unwelcome. We had experienced the worst customer service ever, we had to leave before we even ordered anything! The waitress was super rude just because we asked her kindly to add a chair because someone that was coming from out of town was able to make it last minute. She right away raised her voice saying this table was only for 9 she can’t add any more chairs bc that’ll block the way, she didn’t offer any solutions or alternatives, when we asked ok what do we do she said let me ask the manager. She left and didn’t come back to us just to let us know what’s going on she was helping her other tables we felt ignored bc we were waiting for a response at least! Another employee was walking by we stopped him to ask to speak to a manager our waitress yeld to him from far away speaking in Spanish, shaking her head telling him not to help us! And she told us I’m busy when I finish I’ll come to you.. really?! Why didn’t she tell us that from the beginning and say I’ll be right with you or something more professional. Right when I saw that I had to speak to the manager. Finally the manager came she wasn’t so friendly either she said yes I gave the instructions not to add a chair.. and she said there’s a bigger table that might become available soon. I said we’re not arguing the rules and we’d fallow your instructions but that wasn’t the way to speak to your customers she should’ve acknowledge us better and let us know that she’ll at least try to help, But she didn’t. The manager and the waitress started out talking to us aggressively from the beginning like if were fighting or breaking the rules, that wasn’t the case, we were just asking kindly. We didn’t feel respected nor welcomed. We didn’t feel comfortable to stay and go on with that kind of service. We had...

Unprofessional and rude service. Reservations not honored. They obviously don't care about your experience as evident by the multiple bad reviews all indicating poor service.

We made reservations for our parents' 40th anniversary. Upon arriving 10 mins early, we were told despite having a reservation, it would be a wait of 45 mins - 1 hour. Service was generally slow, requests for refills and other items were not met and one of our plates was entirely overlooked and not brought out until after we were almost done with our meal. My biggest issue was my SIL ordered a black bean and corn salad. When it arrived, there was only lettuce and chicken on her plate, no black beans or corn. We asked our server about the multiple missing ingredients and were told they ran out. This issue would have easily been redeemed had they informed us at some point prior to bringing out the dish so she could have chose something else. Since the majority of ingredients were missing, we asked if they could comp the meal. Our server said the manager told him no, not unless we returned the dish completely. We asked to speak to the manager and were refused. My SIL ended up returning the plate ($21 for only chicken and lettuce) but then had to just sit there and watch the rest of us eat as they also did not offer to replace it with something else. While we were trying to resolve the issue, the staff made it worse by huddling together by our table to talk badly about us and as we were leaving, someone who looked like their cook came out to stand next to our table and stare us down. It was a really disappointing experience to pay over $300 for a meal and be treated...
