I've never had a bad meal at George's. I used to absolutely love George's under the Perkins Road overpass due to the yesteryear mood, and food, and as it was a Baton Rouge classic. But the George's on Highland Road definitely carries the torch and maintains the excellent culinary standards of "classic" George's on Perkins Road.
My favourite item on the menu is the Club Sandwich, complete with fries. BUT the daily plate lunch specials ROCK. Today I had the Chicken Fried Steak with mashed potatoes and gravy and field peas. Simply delicious, old-fashioned, down home cookin'.
The dark, pool hall sort of ambience; the always cheerful, responsive staff behind the bar where one orders the food; and the fabulous classic Rock music--today I walked into George's and heard my guy Tom Petty on the speakers!--make for the kind of restaurant to which you will return over and over. Consistency in quality, generous portions, reasonable prices, and the tastiest food around in the world of casual dining in BR, George's is THE...
Read moreOut of a party of 4, 3 of us were first timers. We thoroughly enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. The staff is friendly, courteous and helpful. I had a baked potato. It was definitely fresh, so hot I couldn't even pick it up. I loved how they put all of the toppings on the side and you get to put on what you want and how much or little you want. I loved that baked potato! It was scrumptious. The rest of our party had the pot roast po boy. I had a taste of the meat off of one. It was so delicious, juicy and tender. The ice tea was very refreshing. We were all completely satisfied with our dining experience. I hope to get to go back soon. There is handicap parking and wheelchair accessible. There is ample room and my wheelchair fit easily as not being cramped up next to another table. There's an awesome arcade room too! Overall we absolutely had a wonderful time at...
Read moreI grew up in New Orleans so i didn't know that George's was a local institution. Talk about atmosphere! I love the dark look of the place and the low-set turn-of-the-century stamped tin ceilings. These are covered by dollar bills taped to the ceiling with patrons' names on them in black marker. The menu is huge but - word to the wise - you've got to write your order yourself on a slip from the stack on the counter! Don't forget to write your sides and drinks! I got the mushroom burger and it rocked! Well-cooked mushrooms in brown gravy over a huge patty on a soft bun. But I forgot to write my side and drink on my slip so all I got is the burger lol. I was there with two dozen friends from the Friends of LSU Libraries after there annual Book Bazaar to benefit LSU Library and we talked and hung out for a great ole time! Go try...
