Theresa’s South in Bay Head is one of the better dining options in a region where truly good restaurants are few and far between. It’s a popular place with an appealing menu and a loyal following, and I can see why. That said, while it delivers in some areas, it falls short in others — especially given the price point.
Let’s start with the positives. Our server was excellent — friendly, attentive, and professional throughout the evening. The food itself was above average and clearly prepared with care. However, the value just wasn’t there. For example, paying $51 for three small scallops felt disproportionate to the portion size and presentation. I’m no stranger to high-end dining, and I don’t mind paying for quality, but there’s a difference between fine dining and simply expensive dining — and that line felt a bit blurred here.
One of the bigger disappointments was the seating arrangement. The space is limited, and the layout reflects that — with small tables for two jammed closely together in a long row, very reminiscent of a Manhattan-style setup. But unlike a top-tier Manhattan restaurant, Theresa’s doesn’t quite meet the same standard in ambiance or service polish to justify such tight quarters. When we were initially seated at one of these cramped tables, I expressed my hesitation. Although I was told all the tables were reserved, the hostess later noticed I was reconsidering staying — and suddenly a more private, better-spaced table for two became available. It’s worth noting that only two such tables existed in the entire restaurant.
Ultimately, our evening had some bright spots, but the experience didn’t fully justify the price tag. If you're looking for a decent meal and don’t mind the tight seating or paying a premium, you might enjoy it here. But if you're expecting fine dining — or value that matches the cost — you may walk away a little...
Read moreI went here with a group of 7, and we had early reservations, as that was all we were able to get - weeks in advance! We were seated right away, and greeted by our server, who brought us waters & bread. He then gave us a few minutes to take a look at the menu. Everyone in our group pretty much knew what they wanted to order, so there were no questions for our server, and our order was placed (3 appetizers for the table, and 7 meals). The appetizers (2 salads & calamari) came out rather quickly, and were pretty good - but nothing that really excited us! The main course followed, again pretty quickly. The portion sizes were fairly large, enough to be filling, but not over-kill. Everyone thought their food was prepared as requested - there were no complaints there! We didnt see too much of our server (if at all) after our meals arrived - we did get one water refill which may have been from the main server, but I don't recall (and it was the only refill of water we received). Our server did come back after our meals were finished to see if we wanted dessert, which we declined. He then presented us with our check - it seemed to be a little higher than expected (note - this place is byob), as we really only had a main course & 3 appetizers for the table - and we pretty much only ordered menu items - not specials. Overall, I would say that we all enjoyed our meals, and that the service was ok. I'm not sure if I would go back again, as I would like to give other similar restaurants in the area a try. If you are looking for a nice meal, I'm pretty confident you will...
Read moreI stumbled upon Kevin’s review and felt compelled to respond for several reasons: 1. My family and I loooove Theresa’s South. We have been patronizing this hidden gem for over a decade and we have never had a bad experience. If no straw and no bread ruins your entire dining experience then perhaps you should self-reflect. 2. Alex and his staff are always hospitable and over-accommodating. The restaurant is always fully staffed with the same friendly faces year after year, even when other restaurants and local businesses have had trouble hiring and maintaining staff. This is truly a testament to the well-run establishment that Alex manages. To liken management to a Friendly’s employee is abhorrent on many levels. First and foremost, every restaurant employee, whether at Theresa’s, Friendly’s, or at a fast-food establishment should be treated with dignity and respect. I applaud every individual that chooses to go to work every day and earn a living, instead of sitting home and accepting handouts. This reviewer sheds light on the other side of the coin: the customer whose porridge is always too hot or too cold…never just right mentality. Some people are never pleased no matter what you do for them. Please keep doing what you are doing. We love your restaurant and can’t wait to come back! Fortunately for us, this Veruca Salt leaves more room to serve customers like us that actually respect the hard work and effort you put forth day in...
