I typically very rarely post negative reviews but this place essentially forced me to do that. It is not just about my (and apparently not only my) worst lunches in several months but also about owner's (Michael's) reaction on that. He was openly lying when he answered all the negative remarks. I've tried eating there 3 times and every time I hoped that my previous experiences were a mistake - I just trusted all the reviews here, unfortunately. Below is the list of items that I've tried that that are definitely should be avoided (at least from my point of view): Schnitzels. They are dry as rubber. One of the reviews mentioned that, actually, however owner said that it is traditional. I've spend more than 2 years total in different parts Germany and I've never seen such a thin cut of meat and such a think crust. Perhaps, that is subjective and Michael may argue, but still... Spaetzle and sauerkraut. . Absolutely tasteless. Again, it is subjective, I agree... Service. It was also mentioned by previous review(s), however Michael can't admit it by some reason.
Here is Michael openly lied answering to review(s): One person recently complained about goulash. Michael said that it was last available 6 months ago. Michael, please, refresh your memory and check your March menu (and do calculations: 5-3=2)! While I share that review's opinion about the soup, I just can't understand how owner can forget his menu (unless he is trying to purposely misrepresent the info). Michael said that the service was slow because they have many orders via phone and many guests. While it is possibly true, it was not what I've faced when I was there last time. In my case I've seen chatty ladies at the counter who seemed to be very unhappy when I asked for dining-in rather than take-out. It took about 5 minutes for them just to bring a water to my table. I can't tell the exact number but during ~30-40min I was in Bakehaus there were about 3 customers with take-out orders and may be 1-2 phone calls. It was not overwhelming service duty, right? With one of the previous reviews Michael said he can't find the order that matches items and he can't take it seriously, so let me provide the data for my order: Gazpacho and schnitzel on Friday (May, 7) around 3:30pm. Hope Michael will start taking reviews seriously now... Michael said that Bakehaus prices are good and lower than Savino's one across the street. I suggest to stop misrepresenting information here and refer to the menus. The most expensive lunch items in Savino's cost $15 ($18 in Bakehaus). Both items in Savino's (salad and steak) are cooked to order rather than pre-made. Steak doneness can be chosen as well (compared to rubber schnitzel). Also, please, note that lunch in Savino's is at white cloth table with real waiters rather than people at the counter, so one may expect water in 1 minute. Also, food in Savino's is served in real plates rather than paper boxes and containers.
Overall, I really hope that Michael and Bakehaus stop lying, improve food items and service quality and lower prices! Otherwise, such quality and attitude is not...
Read moreI want to say nice things about a local establishment, but I really can’t recommend them based on food quality and service. First time there, I ordered a simple sandwich with several basic ingredients. There were no other customers, no other active orders, and 4 young staff standing nearby the whole time. The same sandwich would have been done and returned to me in 5 minutes max almost any place. I waited nearly twenty minutes, until I noted my wait time to one of the staff, who then immediately handed it to me. My sense is the sandwich was already long done, there was no communication between cook and staff, and staff didn’t bother checking at all. It arrived lukewarm but fully cooked, like it had been sitting out a while. The staff, while polite enough, were completely tuned out, gabbing with each other about vacations to Mexico and coffee preferences and clearly weren’t checking anything while I was sitting there. Multiple other commenters remarked on this issue: you just sit there forever while staff gab until you speak up. I’ve never experienced that at a similar establishment before. As for the food, the sandwich was quite mediocre relative to the same meal at other delis. The meat was high quality, but the bread and other ingredients were not, and the sandwich overall was frankly not very good tasting. Price was not too high, but similar ingredients can be purchased at the supermarket to assemble superior homemade sandwiches at much lower cost. I learned you can order food in advance online and spare yourself the long waits and wanted to see if something else there was good, so I also tried some other meals using that option. They were all equally...
Read moreAfter reading so many positive reviews, we've decided to have a lunch at Bakehaus. First of all, it is appeared that there is not so much in common between German cuisine and food at Bakehaus. For example, they have chicken and pork options for schnitzel, however no traditional veal. Then I've never seen such a thin piece of meat in schnitzels - it was mostly bread crumbs, so expect it to be rather dry. Also, Goulash they offered is supposed to be a thick Hungarian soup rather than German, however Bakehaus even managed to ruin that one: it had no meat and was very watery. Moreover, I was shocked how slow and inattentive Bakehaus people are. They chatted with each other and with their friends who stopped by, however it took literally 5min to bring Gazpacho to our table. It is a cold soup, so no heating is needed - all what they need to do is just to take it from the fridge and to serve it right away. I'm not sure why people are praising this place. Needless to say that anywhere in downtown one may have a decent lunch with outstanding service for less $. OK, it is suburb, so owners may think that people should be more tolerant. However, take a look at the Savino's restaurant across the street. For the same price, the quality of food and service is significantly higher. Hope baked items and coffee at Bakehaus is better but we don't want to try it...
