Came to Benson for a work meeting with a co-worker. We originally stopped at the Horseshoe Cafe only to find out they were closed for repairs. We traveled back down 4th street and came across the Farmhouse Restaurant. We were greeted by an older Filipina woman, with blond hair and crabby attitude. She took us to a room that was nice, warm and cozy and sat us in the corner next to a huge space heater. She gave us two menus, asked for our drinks and promptly returned with them (a decaf coffee and hot chocolate).
Now, I LOVE HOT CHOCOLATE...this hot chocolate got them that extra 4th star. It was not made of powder and water but hot milk and chocolate syrup. It was just enough, too. Nothing too overwhelming and it was super delicious. The waitress than walked away, we quickly realized that she was the only person (aside from cook in back) working as evidenced by her multitasking multiple tables. After I finally set up in my chair and tried to catch her attention I let her know we were ready to order, she acknowledged but than did not return for about 5-7 minutes. Upon her return she asked, "you ready to order now?" I ordered a steak and eggs with fruit. She suggested a NY Strip steak or the same price, so I accepted. My co-worker wasn't hungry and didn't order anything but the waitress gave her a glare. It took nearly 25 minutes for my food to come out and when the steak got to me it was very well done not medium-well as I had ordered it. By this time, it was closer to our meeting time so I did not send my food back. She did bring out chili sauce and A-1 without asking, so that's another star. The small accompanying fruit bowl appeared fresh but had more pineapple than anything. After my food vanished (into my belly) she returned and left the bill. It was under $25 including the tip, so that sounds good to me.
The inside had that small-town mom and pop diner feel to it with lots of knick knacks and glass figurines around. They also appeared to have some pastries, but aren't sure if they are homemade or store bought.
My only suggestion is that the waitress needs help or needs to go home. Her crabby attitude was not cool nor were her glares to patrons,...

Breakfast was my objective and the Farmhouse serves it all day, 7 days a week. I ordered the Baja eggs with toast which comes with fluffy scrambled eggs and the chefs seasoned meat topped with cheddar which melts in perfect proportion with the onion saute. A side of country potatoes made this meal filling but not heavy. The toast comes with a house made jelly that is easily spreadable and gives the bread a delicious berry flavor with hints of apple. My wife ordered the chefs special blueberry hotcakes which I liked so much I ordered a single to eat with my eggs. These ARE NOT the heavy, over sweetened pancakes served by the sugar and fat drenched chain restaurants offering similar fare. THESE hotcakes are light, fluffy, and the smell unbelieveably good. It made me sad to eat the last bite. I was sniffing the plate when it was empty. They are that good. The blueberries are fresh but they don't overpower the hotcake. Pour on only a little syrup because you don't want to miss biteing into the slightly crunchy rim and enjoying the tasty flavor of this hotcake. The bacon that comes with the hotcakes is cooked perfectly to a light brown crinkle. The scrambled eggs are fluffy and folded over so they are just that perfect texture. No tough or runny scramble is served at the Farmhouse. The chef sent over a taste of his homemade meatloaf. It almost made me stay for lunch. But I have to save something for the next trip. I don't know...
Read moreOne of the best parts of Benson is that they have some nice little Mom & Pop breakfast/restaurants. We have tried a couple and Farmhouse was next on our list. It is really cute on the outside, and when you walk in it has a small town diner feel to it.
We were there about 8:45 on a holiday and it was not that busy. We were seated right away, and our drink order taken. I noticed right away there were just two guys working the floor and it was unclear as to who was assigned to our table, I think they were just tag teaming it.
We ordered the cinnamon roll to start (since it got so many rave reviews), and the green chile omelette and the Huevos Rancheros. The cinnamon role was reheated in the microwave, so was rubbery when it got to our table. Not that I knock the microwave for re-heating, but it probably could have been reheated for less time given it was over heated. The hubs liked his Huevos Rancheros, and my green chile omelette was okay -- pretty standard, a solid okay. The country potatoes I got on the side were the best thing I had here, drizzled with their homemade salsa. (the toast was meh, as it was made out of super cheap bread)
Glad we tried it, but probably won't return as food quality was nothing...
