We were staying overnight in Benson on our way to New Mexico and tried this place on a recommendation. Finding it was a little difficult since it sits back from the road and does not have a large sign. Honestly, it is also one of those places that you would probably just drive right by given the location. But, it was well worth the effort. It is a true hidden gem. It is a converted house that exudes character from the moment you step out of your car. It is pretty small but that just adds to the character. There are indoor and outdoor seating options but since it was June and 107 degrees outside so we opted for an inside table. My wife and I travel the US in a RV and she is Hispanic so we end up trying a lot of Mexican Restaurants. Mi Casa is probably the best Mexican Restaurant we have ever eaten at. All the food we tried had amazing flavors and the presentations were spectacular. Each dish was like a work of art, food art. We started with chips and salsa. The chips are homemade as is the salsa. It was like no other salsa we have ever had. It was similar to a green sauce but with a creamy texture and just the right amount of heat. We followed that with a shredded beef taco, an enchilada with red sauce, and the Wednesday special which was Shrimp Enchiladas Popeye style. This was 3 enchiladas stuffed with sauteed shrimp, spinach, roasted corn and creamy cheese then topped with green sauce, “Casa Sauce” (white sauce), cheese, sour cream, cilantro, and cotija cheese. Everything was outstanding. The sauces blended perfectly giving you just the right amount of heat, creaminess, and tang. The corn tortillas were light and not overwhelming. And the shrimp was cooked perfectly. For dessert we had the homemade carrot cake. Now this is not like any other carrot cake you have ever had. It was light, just the right amount of sweet without being overpowering, and covered in a delicious caramel sauce. The perfect ending to a perfect meal. To top off the whole experience our server was Andy who it turns out is one of the owners, his wife is the chef/architect of all the food. Towards the end of our meal his wife Santa visited our table as well just to see if everything was to our liking. This place is...
Read moreUpdate 4/25/22: We took my Aunt & Uncle from Washington to eat at Mi Casa while they were visiting. They were impressed by the beautiful presentation and took pictures right away. The food was delicious as always. We had a fajita skillet, enchiladas, taco salad and sopapillas for dessert. Andy & Santa were welcoming as always and the busser was polite and brought us everything we asked for. Would still recommend!
Update 10/2021: We went back for our first visit since Covid started & were very happy to see the new decor. We love the new paint job to the building and the added outdoor seating. Once again Santa's presentation is on point! The new fries were delicious as an appetizer, the enchiladas were so tasty and I tried the wrap which was very good and very filling. We had to have a slice of the carrot cake which is always decadent and delicious! I was happy to see the painting I gifted you 2 years ago is still in the hall on display. Such a wonderful atmosphere! The new server was friendly and brought us refills. Thank you! As always the food presentation is impressive! The fajita skillet was delicious and served sizzling hot with fresh guac, rice and flavorful beans, plus hot homemade style tortillas! The egg rolls will make you go "mmm" and I don't know if they make the soy sauce but it's the best I've ever tasted. We also had the popeye enchiladas which have spinache in them, I'm not big on cooked spinache but these were so tasty and I loved the green sauce that tasted like green olives to me. I stole some from my bfs plate to mix with my fajita meat lol
The only improvement I would make would be to the new female service assistant or hostess whatever she is... She should be more knowledgeable about the specials and dish availability, if you're going to have her serve drinks she will get asked questions and "I don't know" is never an acceptable answer. Teach her to say, "let me find out" & to study the menu.
Thank you Andy & Santa we always love the food and seeing you two! we look forward to coming back for your wonderful...
Read moreTalk about a hidden gem! I was looking for a place to meet a friend for lunch as he was driving back to Texas, which was close to a halfway point for both of us. Mi Casa is a small family restaurant, but do not let its size detract from one of the best dining experiences you'll have. The outdoor dining area is charming & welcoming - it was also full the day we were there! Once inside, we were promptly greeted with a warm & friendly welcome and immediately seated. Menus with wooden covers (so unique!) were dropped off, and our drink order was taken. Chips, salsa, and drinks were promptly delivered, and our meal order was taken. The salsa was flavorful & the chips were fresh. While it was the lunch hour, our meals arrived rather quickly - and did not disappoint! They have daily specials, as well as the usual offerings of tacos, enchiladas, etc. We opted for the Mix & Match combination meals so that we could try a little bit of everything! When our meals arrived, they were both so artistically presented, it almost left us speechless! The food was as delicious as the presentation! The stands for our tacos were made from a piece of tortilla deep-fried to fit the taco - so clever! The crowning touch was the saguaro cactus garnish, also cut from a tortilla and deep-fried. There was the usual "local" crowd, but our server treated us as if we'd been coming there for years. He was busy but still managed to be attentive. The prices are very reasonable for the amount & quality of food you receive. The environment was cozy and felt like we were at a friend's home. we are already...
