First let me start out by saying, my apologies for taking so long to get to this review. It was almost a year ago that Rob and I went and spent a weekend here in Benson. We had a wonderful time. We were walking down 4th, looking in all the windows of the shops because by this time, Covid was making everything practically impossible to get into but that didn't stop us. We walked by and spoke to someone who came out of the tattoo shop, great parlor by the way, and came up to the Horseshoe Cafe and Bakery. It was one thing to stand outside peering in the windows but when we opened the door and walked in, I was taken back. The beautiful wood that holds itself strong in design is absolutely amazing and the Staff it employs is something to be envious of. We were seated in a large booth in the back that was nice and private where we talked in awe of our choice to dine. Our servers name was Melissa, (hey Melissa!!) and she was absolutely amazing herself. She offered suggestions, brought out sauces for me to try, and joined in with a joke or two. Rob ordered the Chicken Fried Chicken, if I remember correctly, and I ordered the Rueben. SO delicious!! The bread was grilled to a buttery crisp and the onion rings were done just right. Not mushy like alot of places serve them. Yuck! After we ate, Rob surprised me when he wanted to bring back with us to our hotel room, a dessert. This was the biggest piece of cake that I have ever seen!! Unfortunately I can't remember the name,...I want to say Butterum, Butter Scotch, or maybe it was a Carrot Cake,....? It's been too long, but I have pictured of this bad boy and you'll know exactly which one I mean when you stop in for a meal. You can't miss it. Oh,...and please tell Melissa that Rob and Pamela say hi. I don't know if she'll remember us, so just tell her that we were the ones who took pictures of every step of the cutting of that big delicious cake! 😛😛 P.S. We couldn't close the container we put the cake in...haha We had to smash it it...
Read moreHad to go to Benson for a business meeting...we got there too early for our meeting so we tried to go and eat breakfast at the Horseshoe Cafe & Bakery BUT there was a hand written sign that said "closed for repairs, sorry for the inconvenience." Unfortunately, we left and hit up another spot; however, on the way back to the freeway, we figured we'd try again and it was OPEN! We stopped it for a warm drink (chillier than Tucson) and I immediately allowed the scents of what appeared to be a homemade banana cream pie envelope me (HAHAHA). No, but really, all I ordered was a slice of this heavenly looking pie and a glass of water.
The decor was just what you would imagine when in a small town like Benson. It had a homegrown feeling to it and maximum capacity (per the sign) was only 42. It was cozy enough to make you feel welcome but had two rooms for sitting and a bar area.
The two ladies that tended to my co-worker and I were great, far better customer service skills than the other place we had stopped at for breakfast. Anyway, they brought out my pie, water and my co-workers hot chocolate. Her chocolate seemed pretty basic like from a powder mixed with water and was not too hot, nor even warm. She drank it anyway. I was served a large piece of pie, the banana and cream scents once again enveloped me (ahhhh)...I took about 4 fork fulls and decided that it just wasn't what my nose perceived it would be. Yes, it presented well; yes, it smelled great, but the taste was too heavy- it was more custard/pudding-like than anything. There were just 4 slices of fresh banana smothered between the custard/pudding-like "meat" of the pie. The crust was not good either, the custard/puddling was so heavy that the bottom of my pie was crumbs and the edge was hardly baked.
I hope to return to Benson in the near future...
Read moreCarrie was our server and she very kind. As soon as she came to take our order she had a huge smile on her face, and was very helpful when it came to us asking questions. I think she was definitely the highlight of me and my sisters experience here. She told us that the biscuits here are homemade, and even told us that the loaded baked potatoes are fabulous including green chili. Her customer service was absolutely outstanding, she is definitely a gem working here, and I will be coming back to see her because the service smile and postivity and being engaged with all her customers was absolutely amazing and I know I speak for all the people she served when I say that! THANK YOU CARRIE!❤️❤️🙌🙌
