On a lovely summer evening, the Fat Man and his wife were able to sneak down to Berea and visit Dona Maria's Tamales and more. Dona Maria's is located in downtown Berea, just around the corner from Boone's Tavern.
I sampled several different items, starting with the Chicken Tamales. The masa was just right on the thickness and had excellent flavor and salt levels. The taste of the chicken was good but it was dry and a little tough to chew.
I also tried the Red Pork Tamale which had tender and flavorful pork. The sauce on the pork was rich and delicate and had a good flavor. Again, the masa was spot on.
I then tried the Chorizo y papa Gordita. This Gordita had a good crunch, and the masa had a light flavor. The chorizo was flavored with a light spice while not overpowering the potatoes, which are cooked to a nice crunch with a soft chew. The flavors work well together, and the lettuce and sour cream give a little texture and cooling effect. The cotea cheese helps with the salt level.
My wife and I both tried a Tacos Al Pastor. The corn tortilla is fresh with a bit of chew and sweetness. The onions and cilantro added texture and freshness. The El pastor was seasoned and cooked well, and the pineapple pieces added flavor, sweetness and a pop. The pieces had a good chew with a bit of fat and were flavorful.
My wife had the Cheese Tamales. The cheese taste and flavor came through immediately, and the masa had a great chew. The veggies in the tamale add flavor and texture to an excellent bite.
Dona Maria's Tamales has a full menu of Mexican dishes. They serve bottled drinks, including a selection of Mexican sodas. The shop is small however the staff was amiable and helpful. You order at the counter, and they bring you your food. The Fat Man says that Dona Maria's Tamales and more is Fat Man Approved...
Read moreWe were in town from GA and were looking around for a place to have lunch. We drove past and seen the restaurant, with the authentic name we knew we had to try it. The restaurant is very clean, the restrooms were extraordinarily clean as well. We looked at the menu and i immediately seen pambasos, which are a type of chile dipped sandwich with chorizo and potatos with sour cream and cheese. I had not had one of this in over 10 years so my choice was made. My oldest son had a torta de asada. And my youngest son had tacos de asada. My wife also had a pambaso. We could not have been more pleased with the food. We enjoyed it so much that we ate here again the next day before hitting the road heading home. The food is authentic, the people are so nice and the restaurant is decorated nicely and is clean. The prices where also on point. I cannot wait to eat here again when im...
Read moreThe only reason I'm giving 2 at the moment is cause I spent about 22$ at this place and got plain tacos and watery elote. Which kinda made me mad. I was patient and should have gotten a discount. Ok long story short we ordered 6 tacos and elote. We told what we needed on there [ cilantro and onion with salsa verde] well when get the tacos they said they ran out of cilantro and salsa verde, and had no onion. Turns out he had some left. Already I was wishing they would have told this before I would have never ordered 😕 then the elote looked nothing in the picture. It was super watery . Overall it was a bad experience. It was the 2nd day of the opening but you figured they would have ran to the store and restocked . They were nice so that's a plus. But I'll try again in few...
