El Rio Grande — Restaurant in Berea

Anniversary trip we overnighted in Berea Kentucky. Just for the night before continuing to our destination. We stopped at El Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant on a whim. We are so glad we did. There was ample parking. Probably more than they need. Which is a good thing. The restaurant has a wonderfully cheerful atmosphere. The decor is bright colors and tastefully done. Very cute.

Although we did not have children with us there were several families at tables throughout the restaurant all enjoying their meals. Or so it seemed to me.

The food was absolutely wonderful. I had a chicken Quesadilla that was the best I have ever had. I could NOT stop eating even though I was full. The portion size was just perfect for my husband to eat some too. Thanks to him I wasn't tempted to eat the whole thing. Our server Erasmo was charming and attentive. Quick to take our orders and the food came out hot, delicious and with good timing. I want to go back on our way home from Georgia.

I just wish they had a location in our hometown in Michigan.

The only reason they did not get a 5th star is the ladies restroom. Be careful if you go in there because of the sink hole in the floor in front of the stalls. If you are not watching for it you could be in trouble. I almost was, as I stumbled on it. Not to the point of falling thank goodness. Out of all of Madison Co, this is the only Mexican restaurant that I would regularly go to.The food at one point in time was delicious and the service was great.

The last time I went was a handful of months ago.I got the same food as usual.The beef queso dip came out ice cold.It was not warmed up at all.The enchilada was fine.I had one small bowl of salsa and one basket of chips.I didn’t ask for more for my table and instead just asked if I could have a small bag of chips and then she brought me a small container for my salsa ALREADY ON THE TABLE.Despite the beef queso being ice cold, I felt like leaving a high tip amount just to show that I was thankful.That was until I get the bill.I got charged for one bag of chips with a sad scoop amount.I brought it up when I paid.Had I known they were going to pull something like that, I would’ve just ordered another salsa and another basket of chips at the table.Their business has been going downhill but this was the icing for me.You won’t have my business ever again nor my recommendation to anyone else for best Mexican...

We called an order in, asked for no beans. The lady repeated "no beans?" I said yes. We picked up the order and went home, and there was beans. Most of the time restaurants just refund or replace. Not these people. The woman laughed in our faces and said we were lying about OUR ORDER, and told us she wouldn't refund or replace it, that we can deal with it. Happened on my boyfriends mothers birthday too. Prices are to high. The workers there have to translate with eachother to understand their customers. First time we visited.
