Located in what many long-term locals will recognize as a former location of both fourth Street bar and Grill, and Ginger Island, now close establishments, this place was a chance drop-in By me tonight, just randomly looking for drink. After reviewing over a thousand restaurants, my loyalties lie with staff, chefs and bartenders, As opposed to the names of a particular restaurant. I'm food and drink groupie, and for me people with a high level of skill in these professions are rock stars. Where they go, I follow. Lo and behold, I strolled into this place just for closing, was allowed a place at the bar, and realized that one of my favorite all-time bartenders Frank, legendary bartender from George and Walt's in Oakland, was behind the bar. I knew that I was off to good start. In an attempt to appear like I was not trying to get drunk, I ordered a couple of snacks in the form of fried, Calmari, ( delicious, crispy, tender, With a recipe that reminded me of Spenger's, the old-school seafood establishment block away which close a year or two ago. Really good stuff. It asked Frank to make me a fancy-schmancy tequila drink of his choosing, ( this never fails to give me a good drink), and he made me an "adult margarita", Which is to say a margarita with a little less sugar and a little more liquor. I also ordered the margarita pizza, Which was good, but I was not that impressed by it. The place has an absolutely great selection of liquor and wine, beautifully warm ambient and well lit, while inviting and low lighting at the same time. I'm going to come back again with my appetite In tow and try some other items on the menu. Great place to bring a date, classy food and classy people. Five stars. Piero

I wanted to try this place because of the Onion Soup Gratinee!! It has been a while since I had seen that on a menu. Being Canadian, I have fond memories of this dish and even made it at home from scratch many times. Before I talk about the soup, we were ushered into a nearly empty dining room at an early dinner hour on a weekday. Even with so few customers, it was a very long time before somebody came to take our drink order. Service was painfully slow all night. I’m fine with leisurely service at an upscale restaurant but this was extreme. We ordered the raw oysters: 4 very lonely oysters on a huge platter of ice!! Delicious as they were with a raspberry vinaigrette minionette, they looked so sparse presented that way! The single crab cake looked somewhat unappealing, pressed into a flat hamburger-patty shape, rather than a plumper, hand-formed shape. Sorry, I forgot to take a photo of this. Both the onion soup and the pizza were good but not spectacular.

One of my high school classmates treated me to lunch at Zut's. She booked the reservation for 12:30 PM. We arrived about 15 minutes early and were seated promptly. The weather was nice for outdoor dining. After perusing the menu, I decided to have the crab sandwich with avocado on toasted sourdough bread and a side of spring mix salad drizzled with a vinaigrette dressing. Drawbacks: Nice presentation of the Arnold Palmer, but the tea overwhelmed the lemonade. It was okay, but I had better elsewhere. I did not finish the beverage. I wasn't feeling it. Bread was fine without the butter. Restaurant added salt to the butter. The buttered bread was very salty. Service was prompt and the waiter was attentive and pleasant. Restaurant is receiving a 4 star rating for the crab sandwich with a side salad, and customer service. Future visit? Yes, if I am in the neighborhood for the Margherita pizza.

The resturant quality here has changed for the worst! My husband and I had a date night at ZUT! and we had a horrible experience! We have been coming to this resturant for years, even before they changed the name to ZUT! Last night we experience extremely poor customer service and our waiter treated us poorly. I have never experienced that at this resturant I'm wondering what happened! They seem to not care anymore. My husband ordered a steak and I ordered the pork chop as we always do those are our favorite items on the menu. My husband's steak was under seasoned and tasted like unseasononed plain meat his mashed potatos were under seasoned as well and lacked butter and cream. My pork chop was not medium well as I had asked the waiter and it was under seasoned just like my husband's steak Then when my husband asked about why the steak was under seasoned the waiter had an attitude! Then the manager came over and offered to pay for our drinks and if we ordered dessert then they would cover it. I believe this was not reasonable but we just kept on trying to enjoy our night! my husband ordered another beer and after waiting the waiter comes over and says your beer will be here shortly then he brings it over without saying anything and kinda slams it on the table and walks away! Upon leaving my husband put the money in the folder and we proceeded to leave then the waiter comes out and asks us are we going to PAY! My husband says look in the folder! Then he did and the waiter says thank you Good night! As many years we have been coming here I'm sad to say we will not be returning! We commute from Baypoint to come to this resturant, but we can find another. I hope they improve their service otherwise they will continue to lose...

Poor service unwelcoming staff. I dined here for dinner with two friends on Thursday November 16th 2023, and we were treated inappropriately by several staff members here at Zut! On 4th Street. We requested to be seated indoors and we all we’re questioned twice about our seating request. The female Maitre’d repetitively asked us about our indoor seating request when there were only two people dining in our seating area at the time we were seated. We questioned the Maitre’ds repetitive requests and found this very unusual. We had to request dinner menus and bread which we never received bread and surprisingly our server removed appetizer plates prior to us ordering as she stated : “ we didn’t need them !” of course as we ordered three appetizers, we did of course needed appetizer plates and requested their return from another server who returned them. The female server waiting on us had a negative body language and her overall demeanor illustrated to my friends and I that she didn’t wish to serve us at all. We decided to remain here as it began to rain. The food entrees we ordered were all satisfactory in taste as were all our three appetizers. It was clearly apparent that we were not welcomed here as patrons at Zut! on 4th Street Berkeley, CA., and we will never return here again, and I will share our dining experience with others. Totally disappointed in the manner in which we were treated here at...
