Wow! Best buffet food ever!
I love buffets and this family run business knows how to do it right! We travel alot and my dog pretty much goes where we do so eating is something that is a bit of a challenge to get both good for you food (veggies), delicious food and food served quick enough that guilt doesn't set in about the dog staying in the car (no worries..car is air conditioned and he is checked on every 10 minutes). This place filled every need I had and deserved every star given and more if I could. We were greeted by Chelsea, our server, at the door and were told to seat ourselves anywhere we liked. After waiting on customers already seated, Chelsea came over and introduced herself and took our drink order. I introduced us (my husband and I) as newbies and asked for her to tell us what we needed to know. She instructed us on the location of various foods and told us that there was 2 more bars (pudding and ice cream) and baked goods in another area not in view from the main dining room. I then asked for her recommendations which she gladly gave ("If you have never eaten here before you need to try the fried chicken and also the pecan pie.") Thanks Chelsea you were so right! The fried chicken was great.. the pecan pie deserved 5 stars by itself. This is high praise from this southern Mama! But wait...that's not all...everything was above satisfactory but there is even more that I have 5 star praises for....the chicken and dumplings were excellent, the fried squash (my husband commented on this so I had to try some.) Perfection!! and a quesadilla that was also the best quesadilla I have ever eaten. And on top of the great food and great service, I also got to meet the man behind the stove that cooked up these wonderful delights. The only complaint I have is that sadly we live 5 hours away. No matter...I just found another reason to travel. Side note: If you use Google Maps to get here...be aware that coming from I85 there is a mistake in the last two directions (Turn left and then your destination will be on the left). When you get to the red light, you will clearly see "Grandma Hoyt's. You can turn left and the restaurant will be on your right. There is also an entrance if you go through the red light and you will take a left in the...
Read moreThe old gray mare, ain't what it used to be. But is still a viable option. Especially if you don't like big crowds and long lines. It seems that both time and COVID precautions change things. This place used to stay packed full of customers. Weekends used to see both dining room areas full of customers. This visit it was more of a ghost town. Just one dining room open and only three or four tables of customers. The buffet bars are no longer self-service, an attendant plates your selections for you. Those fabulous grilled steaks (porterhouse, ribeye and prime rib) that were once available on a separate weekend menu are no longer available. This in itself was a heart breaker. This little restaurant once served up the best steaks I have ever eaten in Gaston county. I used to order up those porterhouse steaks two at a time. Folks used to actually sit and watch me as I gnawed the steak bones, trying to get all the flavor off of them. Time it seems does change all things. The crowds have gone, the buffet is no longer be self-serve. But the selections are still as numerous and still just as tasty as they have always been. The lack of the hustle and bustle of days gone by, simply translates into a dining experience with readily available seating, providing a more quiet and relaxed atmosphere in which to enjoy your meal. So, if you're hunting an all you can eat restaurant, that offers tasty, home cooked, southern style foods, at a low price, with low/no waiting times, stop in and check out Grandma Hoyt's in Bessemer City. It sure would be fantastic to see this little family owned/operated eatery return to the "boom town" status it once had. Perhaps, with enough patronage, they might even return those 'bone-gnawing" good steaks to the menu for...
